GavrielKay addressed that it's wrong to imprison men, women, and children simply because they have the potential to harm others. The example of Meredith's sister, and even Connor, illustrates a need for mages to be properly taught, not for the toxic enviornment of the Chantry controlled Circles. I don't think that anyone here denies that mages should be properly instructed on how to use their abilities, but some of us think the templars and the Chantry are part of the problem.
I find it somewhat odd that people point to Connor and Redcliffe as an example of how the Chantry is right and mages need to be locked away.
Redcliffe happened because all the dominoes fell in just the right way:
1) Loghain was paranoid and wanted Arl Eamon out of commission so he couldn't support Cailan.
2) Isolde was ashamed and afraid of her son being a mage and so kept him home and secret.
3) Isolde then compounds her error by sending all the capable defenders out of Redcliffe on a hunt for Andraste's ashes
Unless you (not you Lob, but generic you) were expecting Connor to walk to the circle (during a Blight) to turn himself in, I wonder what you thought the young mage was supposed to do? Of all the people who collectively caused the situation in Redcliffe, it's Connor who could be least expected to have known any better or done anything differently.
