Actually, as pointed out here:

http://www.forbes.co...of-mass-effect/

You don't actually have to commit yourself to anything. You know that your current cycle has already forced the Reapers to deviate MASSIVELY from their plan. The question really - beside not trusting the Star Child who is still happily blasting away at your ships despite claiming to have given up to the Almighty Shep - is the moral question.

Is victory at any cost acceptable? Shall we sacrifice the soul of our species just to "win".

Refuse, ironically, becomes the only artistic ending by making you lose for taking a moral stand. It makes you realize that standing for your convictions does not automatically result in victory. It is the only ending that isn't rainbows and sunshine (which the 3 other endings have become). It is the only ending that is actually a bittersweet ending.

And that's actually why I would think that people will eventually realize that it's the best ending. Video games typically tell a story of how you win.

The Refuse Ending tells the story of how you lived, and how you can face the end with dignity.

Sometimes, that is enough.

That was quite beautiful Image IPB

@inversevideo - Great response.

I only have two things. Catalyst could have picked the image of the kid from your mind as it understands it is an appearance that you are sympathetic to - so it can communicate with you easier and not be hostile.

The other; disagree on one thing, the Catalyst doesnt need you to choose, he comes to that decision after you "ascend". Blame Bioware for that part. Before you ascend the solution always was perfect and the Catalyst never had any objection to keep carrying out the cycles.

What I see in this thread is that people think much differently (duh). Some are very skeptical and some much more trusting, that will bleed into how they live Shep. You cant honestly say that it only has to be meta gaming for a person to think another way.

I could say you are breaking the structure of Shep by not choosing because Bioware has setup Shepard as a person who will do what needs to be done to end this threat and save who they care about, whether that is by going the extra lengths to save the many or going a more direct path and only caring about his/her kind.

For Shep to say that he/she will find another way when the end is at hand and all Shep knows leads him/her to believe that this is their best and maybe only chance for victory is highly out of character in my eyes, however you choose to play it but so be it, maybe Anderson chose the wrong person long ago.
