It's been well over a year that I last played DAO. I was playing it with all settings maxed on the same computer without any hitches. Today I just reinstalled it along with all of my DLC.

When I click on "New Game", the Loading... icon spins for about 10 seconds and then the game CTDs. I tried uninstalling all DLC and setting all video settings to minimum, but that didn't help.

In a Mod's post about known/reported issues I saw reference to issues with 64-bit Win7, but like I said, I've run DAO on this computer in the past.

Follow-up:

I also tried changing the DAOrigins.exe properties to run in WinXP SP3 compatibility mode and also checked the box for "Disable visual themes" - Neither of those worked either...

I'd really appreciate some help here!!!

Thanks!

TL:DR

Dump the Steam version, get the EA: Origin store download. No charge to registered game owners, and the EA Customer Service guys won't be able to shrug and say "It's a Steam problem, talk to them."

Trashing software that DID work isn't my idea of an acceptable "fix". Does anyone have any better ideas?

Thandal - On the chance I have to go the download/reinstall route, does the "No charge to registered game owners" apply to all of the DLC I have as well?

And how would I download something at a store that I didn't purchase the software at to begin with?

How do I get a hold of Tech Support directly, by the way?

There is an option to connect to a Game Advisor by a Chatline, which is the best way.

@Denlath Vestor;

If you've registered your game with this (the EA) site, then you can obtain a digital copy of everything you've already purchased without additional charge by using the EA: Origin store. Just check your "Player Entitlements Page" ("Games" menu at the top of the page, and select the one in question.)

Thanks, Thendal - I'll give that a shot, but I still would much rather play via Steam, so if anyone has any recommended fixes/something else to try, PLEASE let me know.

I'll probably try downloading everything via Origins and see if that works, but according to HouseOfSwing, I could potentially have issues anyway - we'll see...

I'll post my results here.

Interim update:

I downloaded the Origin client, but DAO didn't show up in the games list. I chatted with an EA person and he added the game to my list after I supplied the CD key (why do they still call it a CD key when there's no CD?)

Anyway, I mentioned to him why I'm doing this and, after explaining all of the things I tried (mentioned above in this thread) he wasn't sure why the game wouldn't run either. To his credit he didn't once say "Eh, it must be a Steam issue". But he still didn't have any additional "try this" steps, either...

I'm in the process of downloading the game via Origin now - hopefully it'll at least work that way.

Hopefully you uninstalled from Steam first. I believe having both installed could cause some issues, as the program files are in a different folder, but the saved games, etc are in the same My Documents subfolder.

Frankly, I don't believe reinstalling Origins is necessary-- I think merely reinstalling, period, may be a solution. Sounds to me like something has gotten corrupted in the original installation-- a problem which the Steam "validate installation" function does not always correct.

Another possible cause-- a corrupted video driver (the game doesn't crash until it starts rendering in 3D).

In addition, I don't believe you mentioned in that otherwise long and unnecessary list of stuff anything about whether or not you have third-party mods installed.
