I am one of the godless heathens that absolutely adored Empire Total War, bugs and all. I hope R2TW has a crazy huge map so I can have me some hot, sexy Diocletian divides.
Oh man, I'm right with you on that one. I wrote the March to the Sea play style for Fall of the Samurai on Total War Center. I am looking forward to this, the leveling/trait aspect they added in Shogun 2 was a great addition in my book and with each faction/culture (not yet confirmed) having their own tech tree this game could get really interesting.

Here what developers wrote on their forums, i got more hyped!
Total War: Rome II™ will sink players into the dangerous political machinations of Rome’s senate, while asking them to struggle with familydilemmas and question the loyalty of ‘friends’ and allies. Leading the greatest army ever seen into battle will be just one challenge you will face at the head of the world’s first superpower.
Will you help forge an empire? Restore the Republic? Or grasp the reins of power for yourself, and assume the hated title of tyrant? Who will you conquer? Who will you betray? Who will you sacrifice?
“How far will you go for Rome?”
“Our games have always encompassed a grand vision”, said Mike Simpson, Creative Director. “But we’re now pushing that vision at both ends of the spectrum. From the immense reach of the sandbox campaign right down to the human-level drama of a single warrior on the battlefield, we’re aiming for an unprecedented level of detail and scale”.
“In our 25th year of games development, it feels fitting to return to our most critically acclaimed era”, continued Rob Bartholomew, Brand Director. “There’s been a multi-generational leap in technology since the original game and we are ready to set another benchmark in gaming.”
Total War: Rome II™ is due for release in 2013. For more information visit the new-look site at www.totalwar.com

Hopefully it's not a sign that the Mayans are right.

I have to admit that I'm a bit biased as I was hoping for a new title during a gunpowder era. Fall of the samurai and Napoleon where clearly my favorites, artillery brings so much more strategic choices in battles.

But the reduced management part scares me (terrifies me actually).

2 questions:
- When this game occurs, exactly which year it starts?
(for example 20 BC)
- How many Empires and Kingdoms Rome II will have?
I hope there is a place for Parthia/Persia, Carthage and Berbers.

You haven't played any TW game fully so far right? Well I can say that with 10+ regions it gets VERY tedious very quickly having to manage the building of roads/farms/workshops/barracks/castles etc. in every single individual region.

Brings back haunting memories of the middle east in Napoleon: Total war, had to deal with about 20 rebellions probably due to my inability to maintain buildings which would remain on fire or in ruins for quite some time due to my struggles with resource management.

I want this game, but it won't take the place of Medieval II for me (it has lots of kingdoms).

I think it must be starting at 350 ishBC
And yes there are those civilazations and we can play as them. But at first game we need to finish it at least once to enable all civs.

I like the micro management bits. The fighting is a necessary evil to accomplish my goal of micro-managing the world. Also, it looks like modding will remain impossible. I'll probably give this one a miss.
I didn't really read the statement as "there's no more city management" as much as them saying there's a much larger map now, and you can deny your enemy specific bits of their own provinces. This is kind of what you could do in ETW by burnin' stuff on the campaign map.
