I purchased this game (download) from Amazon during a recent sale, and am trying to run it on my brand new MacBook Pro w/Retina display. I had no apparent issues installing or activating any part of the game. When I try to run the program it launches and appears to open a fullscreen window but remains on the desktop. I can hear the audio from the game playing, but there is no video.
Any ideas?
Trying to contact EA support about this, but so far nothing.
DA:O Ultimate for Mac installs fine, but no video - any ideas?

I am also having this problem on Dragon Age Origins on my new Retina MacBook Pro. I hear the audio, but I am unable to bring up the game window in any way. It doesn't show up when I use Exposé. I'm using Mac OS 10.7.4.

Same problem. Is anyone at BioWare actually paying attention to this? The last time I played through the game my computer was woefully under-qualified and I had to play at the lowest settings. I was looking forward to playing it with everything on high, but I can't until someone gets around to fixing this.
Also, I'm not playing Ultimate edition, for the record. I bought Deluxe Edition when the game first came out

Issue for me as well. I'm just going to try to get a refund since it seems nobody seems to know how to fix this issue.

Yepp, same boat! bought it to play on mye old MPB 13" but that lagged so bad! Was looking forward to testing it when i remembered that i bought it off gametree
mbp w/ retina... Perhaps its the insane resolution giving it in? Is some one savvy enough to make it run in windowed mode?

Let me add one more post to this. I hope this gets resolved soon since I was really looking forward to playing this game on my new MBP, and it sucks that it won't run (well, it'll run but it's not visible...).

It might very well be that either Dragon Age or the Cider wrapper that is used to run the game on Macs is not yet compatible with Retina display-resolutions.
You could try this Resolution changing App for the time being (download the first one, not the second), and set your desktop resolution to the standard, non-retina value. I do not know which screen-sizes your MacBooks have, standard values are usually a 16:10 aspect ratio:
1280x800 for 13" inch screens.
1440x900 for 15".
1680x1050 for 17".
1920x1200 might also be possible on 17".
Note that this disables Retina resolution system-wide, so if you want to enjoy other programs in high-res, you have to change it back again.
If this does not help, be sure to contact EA Support directly - ideally we should get another patch for the Mac version once they know of these problems. As Retina seems to be the future, developers really should support it.

I tried the app listed in that thread and set the screen resolution to 1440x900 (which is the same on my 13" MBA where DA:O works fine), but it didn't have any impact on being able to play the game.

Meh.
On another note, is there any resolution set in the DragonAge.ini file in ~/Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/Settings/ yet? ResolutionWidth / ResolutionHeight in particular.

I'm having the same problem as everyone else.
Has anyone tried using an external display to check the result?

I do see ResolutionWidth=1024 and ResolutionHeight = 640 under [VideoOptions].
Also, I did contact EA Support and they suggested that I look for FullScreen = 1 in ~/Library/Preferences/Dragon Age Origins Preferences/Config, but I didn't see that setting there, only in the file that you referenced. The suggested setting FullScreen = 0, so I'll try that and changing the resolution setting in that file and report back any results.

Okay, so I first set FullScreen = 0 in ~/Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/Settings/DragonAge.ini, and launched the game. This time I got an error: "Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x7c01efe3. Do you wish to debug it?

Success!! I set FullScreen back to 1 and changed ResolutionWidth=1440 and ResolutionHeight=900 and the game launches properly. I just quick after the main screen, but I'll see if I can make sure that it plays next.

Okay played the next part of my game (after copying the character files from my MBA) and everything appears to be working fine. After I set the resolution in ~/Documents/BioWare/Dragon Age/Settings/DragonAge.ini, I went into Options and maxed out the graphics (haven't tried going to a higher res yet), and it plays and looks great!

Interesting, so either the Retina display or the version of Mac OS X (it was slightly modified for Retina MacBooks) does not support low resolutions like 1024.
Great to hear that editing the resolution DragonAge.ini works though! Do try to bump it up if you will, I'd be interested if DA actually supports Retina resolutions. Also, did you forward your results to EA Support yet, so they can help further people with it?

I was able to bump the resolution up, in game, to the max retina resolution (2880x1800), and the screen was huge, but the game UI elements (task bar, etc) were too small to be usable. I settled at about 1600 x 1050 (can't remember the actual resolution at the moment), and that seems to work fine (with all video settings maxed out). I'll reply to the email from EA Support letting them know...

Great simple fix, jimckimmel. Thanks!
Still have received nothing but basic troubleshooting tips from official EA support. I will forward this on to EA support, and update my review on Amazon to share this tip with others.
