It doesn't take that long to charge up, and you can listen to the audio cue that indicates a full charge-up.
Imo, the Acolyte is best used as an anti-phantom sidearm on certain characters that have powers, that can either knockdown or ragdol the Phantom once her barriers are one-shoted with the pink ******. It really shines on adepts with pull or singularity, since it makes short work of phantoms with a very simple 1, 2, 3, dead phantom combo. It also works well with other knockdown powers such as concussive shot, shockwave, throw or biotic charge.
As an alternative anti-phantom utility gun, I think the Scorpion is still a better choice for grenadiers, infiltrators and the rest of the characters that don't have the ability to immobilize phantoms.
