Valkyrie or Mattock depending on if you prefer burst or single fire. Of course, if you don't have the Valkyrie then well your choice is clear.

On a side note. Any of the assault rifles seem viable on Hardcore difficulty and below because of upgrades. Insanity is a different story.

Beg to differ, in both ME2 and ME3 in all my insanity runs there's only 1 gun I ever counted on/cared to use, the Mattock.  It's power is unmatched considering it fires as fast as you full the trigger, which under stress can be rather fast... With the thermal clip upgrade and the extended barrel it's all a matter of having good aim.  Plus the mattock sounds plain awesome, you can here the power behind every shot!

In multiplayer I still use the Mattock over other assault rifles, but that's only because I don't have a Harrier and haven't had a chance to play with one yet, I hear it's better, but it might also depend on the guns wielder, not the gun itself... after all some people manage to be useful with an eagle.

What about the Saber? Xx

In ME2, I preferred the Mattock.

In ME3, I liked the Falcon and Saber, especially for Insanity. You can just blow the crap out of Brutes and Banshees. The Mattock in ME3 seemed a lot weaker than in ME2.

I only differ about it's use on insanity.

Oh, ok. I'm sorry, I can see how my post could of been confusing. I said that it's a different story for Insanity referring to every assault rifle being viable. The Mattock and Valkyrie are the only ones that really good on Insane.

I enjoy using the Argus rifle myself.

Argus looks and sounds awesome, but the weight to damage ratio really brings it down imo.

My favorite is the Mattock.

I hit more targets with the Argus than the Mattock, I like the 3 round burst cause it offers me to correct my aim. Basically I learned how to compensate for the damage with rapid fire and by only having the Argus equiped.

I actually like the Vindicator the best as an assault rifle. Mainly because it actually sort of feels like one, it is light, and it has sufficient power to kill enemies on Insanity.

Revenant is still a fun choice, but it is not as effective as it was in ME2 because of the reduced accuracy, and the muzzle climb.

Mattock isn't a bad gun, but I am forced to use it too often in MP...

The Particle Rifle is ridiculously effective, which is why I don't use it.

Probably not 'ridiculously' effective - very effective, yes, but not unbalanced. It still has to crank up Death Star mode before it rains on parades and it very much depends on the player's ability to track the target.

Still, my favourite weapon by far. Aside from the obvious clip upgrade, I've found (rather to my surprise) that my preferred upgrade is the AR Scope. Not only does it make it a lot easier to keep the beam on target at range, but also seems to cut out some of the muzzle flash that can throw your aim off at longer ranges. Even helps with headshots.

Now I just need a loudspeaker mod that continuously shouts 'AM FIRIN MAH LAZ0R' once the Death Star beam loads up.

The Collector Rifle is definitely fun. Not the most powerful, and a bit on the slow rate of fire, but it hits more then the Avenger, GPR, and Phaeston, so I like it. Now if they could trim that weight down. Balance or no, a weapon that's equivalent to the size of a stick and made from the same material that the Lighter Collector Armor was made out of shouldn't be so damn heavy.

How many times did we mention that the Chakram Launcher is overpowered?

Revenant is my favourite, even though you need to fire in bursts to have some accuracy.

A note on squadmates:

Give them the Revenant. Squadmates are immune to weapon kickback and weight restrictions. Give them an accuracy mod on the weapon and it will be perfectly accurate (shots will not miss unless obstructed by cover).

I'd rather not, unless bored.  Its good, but you can do better without it.  Ashley is better off with her Marksman Ability.  In all honesty, I'd rather have Dual Falcons with Cryo, or Explosive Particle Rifles with AP and Barrel mods.

Love the Saber, yeah only eight rounds in the clip, but I just love it when you get two Cerberus guardians in the head, or single shot some reaper grunts\\husks.

Depends on what I want it to cover.

Longrange: Saber. Chunk, chunk, chunk, everything across the field is dead. Great accuracy, great damage and slow RoF is hardly a disadvantage on longrange. ANd the sound alone is worth it.

Medium to longrange: Valkyrie, hands down. Great accuracy, decent damage, and RoF is good enough to lay down some lead when you need it.

Medium range only: Argus. Great damage, decent accuracy for that range, and the sound, oh the wonder full sound.

Mattock, Vindicator and the Harrier are the only ARs that are worth anything. All others are ****. ARs didn't get much love.

I have to agree w/ the particle rifle w/ penetration & ammo mods as well as incendiary ammo (damage, headshots, explosive). The barrel mod hardly adds any damage even after the ramp up occurs where as the penetration mod lets you do quite a lot more damage to armor and weed targets out of their cover.

The gun has pinpoint accuracy and never requires ammo pick ups. Combine this with its technical "high rate" of fire, it will reliably proc far more explosive bursts from incendiary then any other AR. This can make focusing down a single target easily capable of melting whole groups in seconds. At level 5-10 it isnt even that heavy having the average weight of any AR.

When I played through I used the particle rifle for mid-short range and the valiant for long range fights and it worked out great. This set up gave me very short CDs on my soldiers Adren Rush (I think around 6 sec approximately for this power) and that was with the soldiers passive (combat mastery) rank 6 weapon/ammo power & defense matrix up in place of the increased weight capacity.

If you have access to Incendiary Ammo, the explosive burst evo paired with the Geth rifle or Particle rifle make those the best ARs in SP. You get so many explosions so quickly that groups and bosses are a joke.
If you don't have Incendiary Ammo the Revenant and Mattock are the best, depending on your play style.

I like them all on different occasions but I haven't played with everyone of them yet.

I thought the vindicator is under powered. I usually stick with the Mattock.
