In DA:O Awakening it had a similar thing where when you talked to a companion in the world they will only give you a single line or two back, and then there were spots where you could have longer conversations.  Is that feature in DA:2 too?  Or is in their 'home-base' the only place to conversate with your companions?

I'm finally playing this game for the first time and I don't wanna miss anything.

Yeah, you gotta go to their home base to initiate conversation :)

Not so much in the main game, but in the Mark of the Assassin and Legacy DLC theres definitely one or two talk spots.

You can only initiate conversations in their home base, but you can only initiate certain conversations at certain times. The key is to pay attention to your quest journal.

There are also a couple of companions you can easily miss picking up! Always make sure you:

1. Read your mail (at Gamlen's house), and
2. Revisit certain ... establishments

Correct. Though, I suspect that this is due to the fact that "home" is not available for the characters during those campaigns.

As for the click-and-talk-spots I only know of two in the game and both in act 3. Bartrends mansion during "Haunting" there are some merchant guils ledgers on the first floor. There is also one during Merills last quest if you press on the altar at Sundermount (the same one where you meet Flemeth).

You can only actually talk to a companion in their home-base. It will usually count as a "Companion quest" so check your quest log once in a while!
