ME 2 and 3 have a more cartoon-like feeling to me. It's the way people look. I guess it's the improved graphics, and something about less being more in this instance. I'm actually finding that's happening in some other games I see too.

I liked the graphics in 2 plenty.  The details were great, and it was sharper than the ME1 graphics engine could do.

Nothing beats the look of some of the armors in ME1.  You had kits - could customize your armor and have 2 mods on it.  Armor was no joke in ME1 - if set up for your class.  Colossus X stuff could take turbolaser fire and you would not die.

The guns were no joke either with all of the weapon and ammo mods.  With the right sniper rifle and that high explosive ammo, you could make a Prime unit have a bad day.  If you used your powers, you could punch his ticket in one shot.

I also loved the Citadel in ME1.  It was HUGE!  You could get lost up in there.  The views of the wards with the Destiny Ascension flying by were amazing - and there were even character interactions for just that instance.

ME1 had the best story, by far.  ME2 was no joke, and I loved it as well.  ME2 was better graphically and with more VA's and all, but ME1 had the best writing.  Sadly, ME3 is the worst of the trilogy.

I think number 2 was my favorite overall. It did lack the RPG elements of ME1 but it had the deepest characters and the widest variety of missions that were all interesting. It was a great blend of action and story telling and above all, had massive replay because of the fantastic ending (your actions DID matter!) I havent replayed any other game as much as ME2. But ME1 was the eye opener to what an amazing Sci-fi franchise it is! ME2 just polished it off nicely (to some extent)

But ME1 did have the best story, Saren was such a badass villain!

The faces were smoother (bu you had to work really hard to ge a Shepard that didn't look pretty bad -like mouth not fitting face) in 1. And as someone mentioned there was that more realistic image of female soldiers in 1.

But yes, the writing of the story in 1 - everything seemed to fit. And being able to explore planets everywhere, I loved that and missed it in 2. Two, for me, well, I didn't like the gameplay as much. M fav class to play (biotics) had been taken from a powerhouse in 1 to the weakest class in 2. I missed the exploration, but thought the mini games were nice. They were kind of cool, actually. Three brought balance back to gameplay, but - with a few mini story lines notwithstanding - the whole main plot just loses it. There's no reason to ask people to suspend disbelief or overlook plot holes that much.

For fiction, obviously we need to suspend disbelief, and I think most of us are pretty adept at that..(Though if you read these boards and how precise people get with their questions and debate, you might not believe that. I'm thinking it's just discussion/conversation and not real refusal to suspend disbelief over details).

If you played and Adept in ME2, then it was one of the most powerful classes.  It went FUBAR on insanity, where everything had shields and armor and barriers and your powers did not work.  I don;t know how many times overload did not work even though I was firing it from a squadmate with a clear line of sight on the enemy, only to watch it miss and hit the box right in front of me.

ME2 was ok, but not the best game ever, you know.  Scanning planets sucked.  Terminator ripoff bosses was the worst stuff ever.  The paragon and renegade stuff got old because it forced you to play the game their way every single time.  Making sure you had enough points for the Miranda/Jack deal wa s pain - and even more so if you wanted to get Morinth.

Honestly though, I think 2 was leaps and bounds better than 3.

I feel the same way about Mass Effect games as I did about the platformers I played as a kid (mostly Crash Bandicoot and Spyro on PSX). The later installments had better base gameplay, better sound/visuals, more variety, more characters, and callbacks for loyal fans to enjoy. But none of them ever recaptured that 'magical' feeling of being let loose in a brand new world to explore and learn at your leisure.

While ME2/3 were more fun to play moment to moment with the improved combat, they never felt as special to me as ME1 did.

Do you think we will ever get a Hi res HD makeover?

Unlikely.
What I fear is a remake, with all the stuff that doesn't appeal to "broader audiences" removed.

I know the movie is coming out so I had to ask. Damn them if they crap all over the original and I`m now filled with dread.

i wouldnt mind a remake with better graphics, much like halo combat evolved

ME1 was amazing but I like ME2 a bit more because its emphasis on characters. Big pretentious plots isn't my thing. Saving the world/universe is a dwindling resource. The more you do it, the less of an impact it has on the consumer. And it's also lazy writing. Can't make the player empathize with characters? Well empathize with the galaxy then because hey! you live there! Ughh.... ****ty writing aside,

ME2 is less about that. It's about stopping some*thing* or some*one* from kidnapping a bunch of people. Excellent! That's something I can relate to. What if my neighboring communities/cities started to feel a lot more empty? What if I knew kinda what was going on yet all my pleas to the government to do something is met with cold stares and bull**** excuses.

On top of that, CHARACTERS! I love good writing and well developed characters so ME2 instantly takes the first place of my favorite game in the series. Thane was a great tragic character. Garrus was just so stylish and his character arc was brilliant. Legion was amazing and I spent hours just talking to him and learning about him and how the Geth function in society. Mordins guilt over him helping restablish a new modified genophage was also very engaging.

No ME2 rapes all other Mass Effects. ME1 had something ME2 didn't have as much: Subtlety. It was an RPG, and it didn't feel like they were ashamed of it. Great games, all three. Though ME2 takes the cake, easily.

Do you remember the Citadel?  Was that not the most daunting and humongous place ever?  Krogan statue, the Relay monument....   the markets,   the music......  I enjoeys finding all of thje keepers - but that jazz was no joke.  They hid them little boogers all over the place.

I will never forget Ilos, and Vigil.  That place felt special.  The last vestiges of the Prothean Empire - and it made you sad.  Liara had a lot to say about the place, it was pretty neat.

All in all, ME1 was a Masterpeice.
