I wasn't crazy about ME1, having played 2 first. It's good, but tough to go back to ME1's gameplay, and I missed the character focus found in 2 and 3.

The exact opposite for me. Played mass effect 2 first liked it alot then went to mass effect 1 and loved it more. I wonder why we had two distinctly different reactions.

I don't know. I found all the arcs in ME1 boring. Never found the Rachni interesting, never found Matriarch Benezia interesting. There's an entire planet where you fight a plant that takes over people's minds. The romances are not well done, either. Almost immediately after meeting you Liara decides she's madly in love with you. Saren and Sovereign are cool, though.

The thing I liked most about ME1, playing it on PC with ultra settings, was just walking around planets with my view turned up into the stars.

never found Matriarch Benezia interesting
But..... but....she has breasts big as your head.:o

Joking of course . I had alot of fun running around the citadel doing side quests and exploring remote planets , something mass effect 2 and 3 never delivered. The story arc to me was great. The only thing I hated was the elevators , not riding in them but that there were so many of them.

Sorry, for me ME2 was the gem of the series, ME1 was fantastic and new but it was rough around the edges particularly in regards to the combat, ME3 was far too linear and autodialogy, ME2 was near perfect. The one weak spot of ME2 was the collector main plot, which didn't fit the main "destroy the reapers" plot of the other two games.

Loved ME1 because with the Mako I felt I was really exploring the galaxy.  ME2 and 3 took away all exploration.  The galaxy was no longer this cool place for me to find things in the last two games.  Also I great story with many twists, turns, decisions, and discovery.

The Collector plot was important though because it established just why the Reapers had to come in and extinguish (harvest) advanced life.  Also exposed a lot on Cerberus, which was important for ME3.

  • I did enjoy the Mako rides in Mass Effect 1. Don't really it miss it that much though.
  • Facial animations and lip syncing are generally good throughout the games, maybe a little worse in Mass Effect 3.
  • Mass Effect 2 hands down as the charatcer devlopment was really good and it provided an insight into other parts of the galaxy. I also really enoyed spending time with the characters, the combat and working with the mysterioius illusive man. Mass effect 1 is really good too though.
  • I don't know what went wrong with the reapers, I think they could have offered a much better explanation.
  • They didn't take the extra time to make any of the decisions matter and instead turned it into a linear game with a few slight differences depending on your choices. Which sucked.

Actually, the combat in ME1 was really bad.

Thats why mass effect 3 fails , because its mostly about cerberus and not the reapers. I spend most of the game fighting and talking to damn cerberus and the illusive man.

ME1 also had the best soundtrack.

Love theme;

Ending song;

ME1 had a great soundtrack, but its ME2's that I can't get out of my head, still.
mainly this track

Sorry, but as good as the ME2 soundtrack was, it didn't play to the game in the same way. ANY song from Mass Effect 1, and I'm instantly taken to exactly where in the game it plays. From ME2, more often than not I'm trying to figure it out. I look it up..."Thane's Theme" it says...and then I wonder if it was actually playing at any point when Thane was around.

It may not have been perfect. Nothing is, but it was a genuinely gratifying experience from beginning to end.

100% correct

Do you think we will ever get a Hi res HD makeover?

If they remade ME1 to look and play like ME2 or 3 (as far as textures, models, maybe combat, etc.) I would buy multiple copies out of pure fansanity.

Im wondering why everyone brings the combat from ME1 up. I replayed it recently and even though it isnt as smooth as the sequels or Gears of War it isnt so bad that I couldnt enjoy it.

Combat is a pretty essential part of gameplay. This isn't Deus Ex; you can't skip (almost) all of the fights.

Gameplay is very important. But i overlook that when playing ME1. The story and characters are so well done, I don't really care how it plays, so long as its functional.

I liked ME2 better.

If we're talking about soundtracks, then I have to mention the Illusive Man's theme and the Suicide Mission soundtrack.

I'm agree with the OP : ME1 is and will remain the best of the trilogy...

Me2 is not so bad, storywise... (not RPGwise)

I will just tell that ME3 didn't happen and for me Sheppard is somewhere in the Galaxy trying to save the galaxy from the reaper... Forever...

Best end...

JPR out!

1. No, the mechanics sucked and I doubt that if bioware in their prime couldn't make vehicles work that they'd ever get it to work. Like Suda 51 and sucky gameplay with fun games, it is always meant to be. I never got to see the scenic sights because I was busy falling down a cliff that was blocking my path on the cookie cutter planets I always got dropped on.

2. Not really no. Shepard's skin looks less shiny and that's about it for me.

3. Mass effect 2 because the gameplay was cool and almost all the missions were enjoyable to me, it felt like a nice mixing of genre's was taking place. Played mass effect 1 so many times that I'm sick of it and don't even care anymore, and when that happens and the gameplay is not so good like in ME1 than the whole thing becomes a chore for me. Not so with mass effect 2, since I can enjoy playing it without getting fed up with the gameplay at all.

4. They got a reason to do things, which many people think was stupid. And for a lovcraftian horror, yes it was. Like explaining the force, it was a bad idea with good intentions.

5. My shepard felt like my shepard throughout the game, sorry you didn't feel that way but at least you have many here who will support you and give you reassurances on the matter.

Mass Effect 1 probably has the best overall story, but it has the weakest gameplay...even though I did enjoy combat with the Mako.

1. Well I missed the mako, though sometimes I thought there was a little too much wandering <__<
2. Yes, facial animations were better and you didn't have female team mates whoring around with their boobs on display in the collector base.
3. ME1, If ME2 had the same attention to detail of the first ME it would be my fav, but overall I prefer ME.
4. Space magic! They've turned badass reapers into lawnmowers (and TIM into a retard Osama Bin Laden)
5. They've probably wanted to make the game more action and less rpg to attract new players and it sucks.
Not just the story but the dialogs too don't have the same variety of choices and lack intensity.
In both ME and ME2 you could be both mr nice guy or mr badass, in ME3 you can just pick how to do what they want you to do.

EDIT: ME2 and ME3 are bloody EASY, I've played all the three games in insanity. ME had me work hard even in hardcore while ME2 and ME3 in insanity are damn easy (especially ME2).
In ME the enemy could overheat your weapons or stick you to the ceiling with a lift. In ME2 and ME3 they're just shooting you and maybe throwing a grenade.

I love all three games... can't understand anyone who says any of these is a "bad / terrible / horrible game", but to each his own. I probably love ME1 and 3 just as much but for different reasons. 1 for the discovery of the universe, and 3 for the gameplay, which is to me a good balance between 1 and 2. ME2 is great too but the plot wasn't as great.

I wish I could say the same but so far I am cutting my veins to force myself playing ME1, (I must have finished countless times, but I lost my saves, so I am replaying it twice to get the two genders options available with the corresponding paragon/renegade).

If ME1 is all you have in the series, then is good, but if you have ME2 and 3, in comparison ME1 is boring, broken, and the story makes little sense if you really pay attention to some of the things characters come up with. (One of the most recent I noticed is Benezia, mentioning the return of the reapers, and then suddenly she has no idea what a reaper is when you question her, and calls Sovereign a "dreadnought" I mean come on! Have you become senile all of the sudden only on plot informations?)

Mako? Yes we all know about that, and to be honest the story driven missions are not the worst (Like Noveria), but the open EMPTY enviorenment exploring are just a blight...

Combat is soooooooo slow and floaty...

Power use - Wait another 30 sec before you can use this again
Fire your weapon - Oveheat wait another 5 seconds before you can use this
Melee - What's that?
I can crouch!!! - Except that your collision box is twice your size, so it really doesn;t make much of a difference

Conversations:

And please do not even go with "Conversations were deeper" because THIS is how much deeper they were:

Do you agree with me Shepard?
-Sure
-Yes
-I am not sure (AKA 3rd yes)

Seriously go play ME1 now, and then after 10 hours, come back here and tell me that is still a better game than ME2 and 3.

Yes, ME1 will always be my favourite, mainly due to the sheer RPG aspect of it. Shepard only says one word without the player input. Then you can be as rude/poliet as you want to everyone.

In ME3, why did they even bother with the dialogue wheel. Though they did add Action Mode. :|

Though if they could pull the combat over from ME3 to ME1, then it would be perfect. (but none of those ****** thermal clips)

PLaying ME1 right now and I love it. Plus adding such a strong melee in ME3 is just crap. C'mon now a krogan slap makes more damage than a gunshot to the face (or an arrow to the knee).

I agree, ME1 was, in most respects, the best game of the series...

First and foremost, ME1 was more RPG, in regards of party and equipment management... something the other two games lost almost completly (no matter what BW said). I also liked the exploration aspects better, even if the cooky cutter sidemission got old pretty fast. Those where handled better in ME2. Finally, the characters and the world had more deph to them and seamed more believable...

This.

"Hey Samara, it's 200 below. Aren't your boobs cold?"

"Miranda, this atmosphere is composed of chlorine, why hasn't your skin melted?"

I could even buy that as "biotic fields protecting my boobs" but why, oh why a thousand-year all knight errant would ever wear high-heels?????? Your job is killing, not attending cocktails for **** sale!

As for my favorite ME. I think the first one, too. I liked how sentinels were an actual support class, I liked the feel of the biotic powers, I liked the atmosphere, I liked the sci-fi "realism" instead of the over-the-top comic book bull**** and lizards using martial arts to kill people wearing armored suits that can withstand a projectile fired at a good fraction of the speed of light.

The suicide mission is still awesome, though.

I loved mass effect 1 for the story, the rpg elements like trading/selling, the inventory system, customisable everything, proper armors, good lip synching, great enemies and amazing boss characters like saren. Though I don't care too much for the mako, it was just an easy way to get around and a good way to whittle down enemies. ALSO THERE WAS WREX.
My favourite game has to be mass effect 2, because it is a great mix of story from mass effect 1's original writer and good mix of combat and gameplay. SOME great characters like mordin, thane, tali as a romance option, grunt and legion. I loved heavy weapons. The DLCs for both games were great, I loved Lair of the Shadow Broker and Bring Down the Sky most of all. Some of the best DLCs ever.
No ME1 remake unless they make it EXACTLY like ME1. And you know they won't do that, with the original writer gone, they'll make it appealing for the new players instead of those who played mass effect 1, and it'll be different. I mean, I wouldn't want mac walters to ruin the story of mass effect 1.
