To be fair Asari aren't actually female, they're "mono-gendered" as Liara puts it "male and female have no real meaning for us."

She hasn't met Shaft Shepard yet.  She'll know what being with a male mean.  She'll know.

The problem now with creating a male asari type race is that it could easily come across as contrived and as some kind of marketing ploy rather than a natural development.

That's because it would be incredibly stupid. The asari are already a very silly concept, but since they are pseudo-gynogenetic ("melding" being the activator rather than sperm) with functional sex organs, one could at least say that they were once a sexual ZW species in which the males were homogametic, and at the point in history where they began producing parthenogenetically, females with a WW chromosomal makeup were the result. This would have ensured that all children born to such individuals would be female (and WW homogametic) regardless of whether the WW individuals reproduced sexually or asexually. It would also explain why there are no males. Alternatively, the asari could have been an X0 species (assuming Y-chromosome loss) before they began gynogenesis.

None of the above would be possible for an "all-male" race, as male bodies (with the exception of Syngnathidae) do not have the ability to sustain a life form. If a species were physically male (and not hermaphroditic), it would necessitate they reproduced sexually at some point, and if they produced sexually and the females began disappearing, it would just lead to a mass extinction. Even if the males externally fertilised and incubated the eggs (a lá the seahorse), they'd still die off with no females to supply ova. A race that was "able to impregnate anything" (Jesus Christ) would just be xenomorphs some sort of intelligent macrovirus that destroyed its host. They still wouldn't be physically male.

What would make the most sense would be having a species that only assumes a sex during the mating period and/or after they have chosen a partner (returning to sexlessness afterward). Not only is this an observable phenomenon in nature, it has been used effectively in harder sci-fi.

Model an all male lizard/fish species after Sean Bean and the science wouldn't matter.

There's also the deal with salarian and krogan women being rare.

Salarians and krogan may be, but, as you said, turians are not. Additionally, as all the species in ME are (apparently) binary sexed, there's a fifty-fifty probability an individual would be female. If making more than one model is cost-prohibitive, they could have quite easily made the single model female; there is no cultural reason why the batarians, elcor, volus, or drell (minus "romance option") needed to be male. They just chose to design them that way.

Part of the reason why so many of the aliens are humanoid is so that you will see them as people, and not animals at the zoo.

A sapient species that is technologically superior already prevents them from being "animals at the zoo."

The other part is because humanoid models are easier to animate for combat.

I didn't suggest they should be non-humanoid.

I don't think anyone is saying that they need to add "****** and lipstick," but to keep them relatable, they needed to make them female-looking from a human point of view.

No, they don't. I don't see how divergent sexual dimorphism would make a character less "relatable." If written well, even a computer with an androgynous automated voice can be empathetic.

After all, a lot of people can't tell the difference between sexes of many of the species that the aliens are supposedly based on, so it's fair to assume that a lot of people wouldn't be able to tell sexes apart for these aliens either, unless they made them more humanlike.

But again, how stupid would the average gamer have to be if they can't tell the difference between a male and female voice? Or, you know, pronouns. Regardless, I don't see why it's important for female aliens to look female by human standards. That's just dumb.

Edit:

Andy the Black wrote...

Monosex means single sex, and that sex is female. The codex even calls them an "all-female race."

A Sean Bean species would have died out years ago.

There we go! That's why there are no dude versions of Liara's species. Javik should mention it though: "Handsome, red versions of the Asari were around. We found that they betrayed each other and died".

Could be a little like an Incubus. Sort-of like a parasite.

'Sleeps' with other men to convert their seed, so that the next time these other men have sex with a woman and get her pregnant, the child is actually an Incubus. If this Incubus decides to sleep with a female directly, well then converts her womb to breed more of himself.

Thank you, good sir. I couldn't find one with male Shepard in it, and Lord knows I don't want a FemShep one.

Another Batarian female would be Dekarr's missing wife. Dekarr is one of the Batarian refugees on the citadel in ME3...

IMO, The Witcher 2 handled gays a lot better and a lot more satisfyingly. If you insist on putting gays to games, I want an option to get rid of them. Cortez's incessant whining was bad enough.
