I'm having trouble figuring out how to use Lash effectively, and I also don't really understand what it's meant to do.  I must be missing something with this, because on the surface it doesn't seem like pulling an opponent behind your back is very useful.  It also doesn't help when most of the time I see people use it, they Lash an enemy and then forget about the enemy.  Usually the enemy still has health left and is now in a position to sneak attack.  So it seems to do more harm than good, at least in how I've seen it used thus far.

So, what is the point of Lash, and how does one use it effectively?

One does not simply use lash effectively.

That's usually my reaction when a teammate uses it.  I don't spec it currently.  Was just wondering if maybe I'm missing something and there really is a use for it?

Spec it for damage or use smash first and then yank them out of the air when they go flying. I have mine for max damage so when I lash them, they die once they land.

Smash to take down barrier and then lash to kill them with a biotic explosion works reasonably well against phantoms, in my experience. Other than that, it's fairly situational, but can be effective.

To Phoenix, one must be like ninja....

LOL

The point and effectiveness of lash is simply to kill lesser enemies. If you go the damage route on lash then you can shred through foes by flinging and forgetting. Still this is not recommended, rule Number 19: ALWAYS make sure they're dead. If you lashed something, do NOT take your eyes off it until you can confirm death. If it gets lashed behind you, follow it.

I tend to lash things that I know will die or I can drag out into the open where I can finish them off with a quick burst from my Phaeston. If anything gets lashed behind me I continue to track it and make sure it dies before switching to another target. If it doesn't die I follow up with walking over to it an leisurely beating it to death with the light melee. Since they get incapacitated longer then a CS shot I have plenty of time to walk over and wait until they start to get back up before whacking them. They die in one hit after all the damage they took from being flung around.

Also, while the enemy is helpless, they tend to take damage every time they hit a solid object while in flight. I suggest using it to pinball enemies in tight spaces to kill them rapidly.

One final thing. If you can get a direct line without curving it, you can drag enemies directly in front of your cover so if they don't die, you can Grabkill them once they stand back up.

I generally just use it on low-level enemies who've already been hit a bit. Once it catches, I know the guy is dead and can turn my attention elsewhere.

That said, I'd say it's of somewhat limited utility.

I may have missed a part of what my team mate was doing, but it looked as if lash was insta killing phantoms even with barriers. He'd lash the phantom (every time it had a barrier up, either partial or full) and I'd follow it so I could make sure it was dead.

By the time it hit the ground it had no life left? Seemed to act much like a husk?

I both hope I was missing something and hope I wasn't as every other time the guy lashed targets that I was in the process of killing :(

I've seen players be very very affective with it for sure but they did not over use it. Yesterday I was in a game and I was like a seagull following a fishing trawler as I was following around a serial lasher and finished off most of the mooks he was lashing behind us.

My only big beef is people who lash between waves just to be freaking annoying.

If you spend several years working on a ranch, you'll better understand this class. Maybe you need to watch City Slickers and listen to some Toby Keith to really start to appreciate the space cowboy abilities.

^ this or the reverse, pull an enemy close then whack with smash, also when fully speced with sheild penetration you can pull most enimies, playing swing ball with a phantom is quite fun - on the same note, if someone is about to be insta killed by phantom lash them to save said teammate

With the PA, I don't usually use Lash very much on weak enemies like Troopers/Cannibals - I just use Singularity instead.  It's much easier to control them.  I do use Lash as a detonator though.

Lash is much better against shielded enemies (and sometimes Phantoms).  The "pull" of the Lash is weaker against shielded enemies, and if you fire it straight at them, it usually doesn't fling them up over your head.  Instead, it kind of just slides them along the ground a few feet so they're laying right in front of you on a platter to be Smashed.

I have lash specced for shield and barrier penetration and I use it to yank stuff out of cover that is outside of smash range.

1) Make sure you have shield penetration for rank 6.
2) Use it to pull one guy away from the rest of the group. I sometimes use it several times on the same enemy to get the target close enough to safely charge or smash. You can also use it to get people out of cover.
3) You do get about a 2 second window to get a biotic explosion off of it.
4) Do not troll your team mates with it esp Krogan and Vorcha. I am still learning not to do this :(
5) Use it to stagger atlases.
6) Use it to strip guardian shields
7) Use it on phantoms so they put up their hand of denial....then shoot them a lot while they pose at you.
8)  Use it to detonate biotic combos (on non armored targets).

Its a funky ability, but it is pretty satisfying to lash a fully shielded target right into the ceiling above them.

You need to use it on anything that moves, and you need to ignore the teammates that can't adapt.

That's how you use Lash.

Smash with biotic effect in evo 4 I believe following by immediate lash equals BE.

Lash things close to smash them.

Lash things from cover.

Lash to explode already applied biotic effects.

From what I've seen the general trend is to lash the phantom behind your unsuspecting team mate (i.e. me). turn around and watch the instakill. I now just stay well clear of the lashmonsters.

You will know when to use Lash by being careful not to pull Lashed targets over your cover (or your teammates' cover), and remembering that Lash will still stagger most large targets that it can't yank across the map.
