So given the rise of class-based shooter mmo's such as team fortress, valkyria chronicles, mass effect 3, borderlands 2, battlefield 3, etc.., I've been wondering about how such classes correspond to the classes in class-based fantasy mmorpgs. Given the basic classes, rogues, warriors, healers/clerics, and mages, how do they correspond to the classes in shooter mmorpgs? For example in valkyria chronicles, I see how healers, rogues, and warriors fit in, but where do mages fit in? In team fortress 2, it's obvious the healer is the medic. The infantry, spies, demoman,.... all fit in within the rogue/warrior classes. But where do the mages fit in? The engineers? This raises the question of what exactly defines the mage class rather than simply magic? Are there are other things that define such a class? We can label it as squishy and dps class, but at the same time, so are rogues? So what class in class-based shooter games correspond with mage classes? What do you guys think? 1) Say that you like the rogue and warrior classes. Since there's the general concept of it, can one relate this to other classes in other class-based shooters? 2) How would this relate, and what would we have to look at to relate the classes?3) Are the base classes of mmorpgs rogues, warriors, mages, and clerics?thanks
In short, all I'm trying to figure out is how classes in fantasy rpgs can relate to classes in class-based shooters or in any other genre.

actually, i don't like this class thingies, because it is boring and old

Soldier/Warrior = tank
Scout/Rogue = dps and lockpicking/disarm
Medic/Mage = healer and nuker

These thing is overused over and over. when we buy a NEW game turn out to be using this old mechanic and we are actually play the same game with different titles

Original Star Wars have no classes but because it have been into games, there we have Guardian/Juggernaut, Sentinel/Assasin/Shadow, Consular/inquisitor...ect...all Jedi/Sith are actually everything in one, they are actually Warrior-Mage or spiritual warrior or to be specifically in term are Warrior Monks (such as Shaolin Master or Knight Templar). Why must separated into classes?

John Rambo can do everything...he can disarm traps, creating bombs, laying mines, heal himself, can use bow and arrow, can move in stealth, ect ect as a Green Barret Commando, but if some game developer put him in game, he will be a dumb soldier class who fit the role of a tank, who is designed to suffer all damages and only good at that...

Take tf2 for example which represent most classes in class-based shooter.
I would definitely put ranger/rogeu calsses with spy, scout, and sniper.
Warrior with soldier and heavy.
Cleric obviously as medic.
Where would demoman, pyro, and engineer go?
I'm trying to figure out if mages should correspond with more technologically advanced classes or are nukers even though rangers/rogues nuke harder or have ranged aoe skills as well in some games.

None of the games you listed are MMO's. MMO is the acronym for Massive Multiplayer Online. Mass Effect 3 has multiplayer but it's not massive nor is TF2's multiplayer. Same goes for Borderlands 2, Valkyria Chronicles and Battlefield 3. In-fact all of them (save for TF2) have single player campaigns.

Anyway a mage would be a healer.

If we're talking about offensive mages then I guess heavy ranged support would best describe them.

Cleric and mage can both be medic. (Unless we're saying that mages don't have healing spells now which is how it is in D&D if I'm not mistaken)

Demoman would be a mage specializing in offensive spells such as fireballs.

Engineer doesn't really have a place in fantasy-classed based games.

Though I'd say that the pyro would represent a mage who can cast fire spells and only casts fire spells and nothing alone. Warhammer has mages known as fire mages who only cast fire based spells.

but wouldn't the pyro just be a guy using a gadgets? I see hte engineer as more of a mage

Well don't all the classes in TF2 use gadgets to help them in their tasks? The Engineer is more of a guy who fixes and builds things. I don't see how that fits a mage.

cuz the mage is the equivalent of the modern-day scientist engineer. I see the mage as more of the scholar, not the physically trained soldier.

Scientists aren't scholars though. Though they are brainy and mages have to be too in order to cast spells but I think that's the only comparison they have. In terms of what they do (engineers and mages), they are two different classes.

Shooters aren't RPG's, period. They are a merely a way for kids who get bullied at school to vent out their frustration.

yeah that's true. But over time, science kind of becomes magic and vice versa. For example, mages can be invisible, now they're doing research into optics which can actually make things invisible, for teleportation, they're looking into quantum mechanics for that. It kind of becomes the same thing.

Whether these things can become true is debatable. I never even knew research was being done into teleportatation or turning things invisible. I guess anything is possible so long as we put our minds to it.

Well, as far as the invisibility thing... no.  Its not debatable. Its a reality in less than a decade. (Ignore everything after the 2:10 mark).

In regards to teleportation, that's pretty much impossible, even with quatum mechanics. They could do it in theory, but it would require assembly matter to a level of precision completely impossible with science existing anytime this century.

But all that aside - classes exist because to make everyone the same is truly boring. There are different roles different skills can play into how a battle plays out, not everyone is going to have the same skills or specialization. Its pretty hard to come up with totally different roles in combat without reverting to the same old trope - someone who can absorb lots of damage, someone who can deal lots of damage, someone who can help others, someone who can remain hidden until they can get the drop on enemies... pretty much any other variation in combat either becomes too over- or under-powered.

Its not a lack of imagination. Its just how standard battle works, both in the real world and in games.

also, many of the classes play multiple roles. For example, while warriors are clearly tanks, I've seen them play the dps role as well as even support roles as guardians in guild wars 2 or dragon age 2.
