A friend of mine shared a theory with me once.  The more tough and scary a player tries to make their name, the worse they'll be.  And the more silly or stupid a name is, the better they'll be.  He promptly named his own character PooPooFace.  

Didn't work.    

Still, I think there's some credence behind the belief, even though it's a generalization.  He just mixed up cause-and-effect.  Really over-the-top names like BLOOD_CARNAGE, XxAwesomeKillerxX or ELITE_SNIPER_KING (totally made these up for example) tend to be chosen by young or immature players who don't realize how cliche and ridiculous they sound.  This lack of insight generally foreshadows a similar lack of insight on how to play the game well.

Supposedly it was Bob Marley's Birthday (He was famous for his use of weed and his music pertaining to it.)

Well, there are a lot of different stories behind the origin of the term. This seems like the most legit to me. I'm from the Pacific NW where the fine for possession is a slap on the wrist if they even decide to prosecute. I dabbled in my youth and my nervous system is just fine. Not to start a debate, but I have friends that are alcoholics and others that are stoners. The alcoholics have far worse health problems and get in far more trouble (DUI's get much more than a slap on the wrist here).

The Bob Marley thing is just the most common, but you are indeed correct about the fact that there are multiple theories on how it got started (After all, do we really expect potheads to remember correctly?)

my wife made my GT and have had some people make fun of my name for it. I went and bought a headset to counter the mockery with "hey i am a 33 year old man not a 12 year old"

Used to play Chromehounds back in the day and one of the goofiest gamertags I saw was Giant Vi13rator. His name might've been goofy, but he schooled many with a community build dubbed "The Do**ey P***her".

He was banned after 3 months due to the excessive number of complaints received by Microsoft.

Strange gamertags are nothing new, but I'd hardly use it as some sort of filter for choosing who to play with or as a crude metric for performance.
