First off, I wanted to post this because I have noticed a lot of arguing and rather malicious replies that are being posted throughout the forums. I post this in hopes that everyone remembers that we are all people and we all have feelings, all though this seems to be easily forgotten when people are on the internet. This topic will contain terms and advice on how to deal with malicious behavior on these forums, I will cover these topics to the best of my abilities.

Flaming

Flaming is one of the most common issues that arise on a forum. Flaming is best described as hostile arguments between two or more people, flaming mostly directs attention away from the topic and causes a disturbance in the topic and forum.

Here is an example of two users flaming each other:

User 1: I think that Drain Health sucks, Heal is a much better spell.
User 2: Are you kidding me? How can you be such an idiot! Drain Health allows you to deal damage and heal at the same time.  Noob Alert!!!
User 1: Who the F are you calling a noob?! I beat this game more than 4 times, so go back to flipping burgers you fatty!

And so on...

See how that can be very distracting and pull more members into the bickering? Many times members don't read their post and thus don't realize what they post may sound insulting to other members, the whole issue could have been avoided if User 1 replaced "sucks" with something like "not nearly as effective". User 2 could have avoided flaming by leaving out the insults like "Idiot" and "Noob Alert".

Around 99% of the time flame wars can be avoided if one user does what is right and let the insult slide. If it can't be avoided then the mods will lock the topics and maybe issue a few warnings, and I have moderated forums before and trust me, it is a lot more work for them than you think Image IPB.

Trolls

Trolls are people who purposely post negative and inflammatory topics in hopes to get a negative reaction from people. People who post these purposely want to invoke a disturbance andalso want to start flame wars; game trolls tend to mention other games since people are more like to post their opinions about the topic. Another favorite tool of trolls are bringing personal opinions and controversial topics into the mix.

Here is what an obvious troll topic might look like:

User 1: This game sucks! The archery is totally broken and the characters are soooo annoying, why is there a gay elf in the game?! World of Warcraft is a much better game than this piece of crap! Everyone who plays this game are noobs and virgins because they play a game like this... Bioware sux and you all suck, go get a real game like WoW.

Pretty harsh right? Best thing you can do is report a topic like this immediately, however, most topics on this forum are simply frustrated players who want answers and want them now. Unfortunately, the topic comes off as flaming and most people start flaming the original poster when the poster just wants answers. The best thing to do in a situation like this is try to get more information about the problem and try and help the poster or try to point them in the right direction. If the poster refuses to be helped and keeps ranting on about the problem then leave, maybe contact a moderator to see if they can help.

The best thing you can do is leave the topic with dignity and not launch a verbal attack since that is what the troll wants.

About Spoilers

In Dragon Age: Origins General Discussions forum spoilers are not allowed. A spoiler is when specific information about the game or game content is posted for all to see. This is not allowed in this forum! If you need information please post in the forums that state "Spoilers Allowed".  Most of the time people don't know that they are posting spoilers and is purely accidental, the best way to catch yourself is to ask yourself if people would know this if they just started the game. If the answer is NO then don't post it, if you are not sure then do NOT post it; if you think you know the answer to someone's problem but could be a spoiler simply send them a private message asking if they would like to know the answer to the question. Or you could simply point them in the Spoiler Forums.

Screaming

DOES THIS ANNOY YOU? IT CERTAINLY ANNOYS ME. That my friends is screaming if you didn't know, although nothing is really wrong about screaming it is considered to be impolite and very annoying.  Simply avoid the caps lock button and you are cool.

End Notes

I am sure I have left some things out, if I did please PM me and I can make updates. This topic is not meant to point anyone out but simply inform people what happens around this forums; I hope that at the very least you are more aware of what you do and try to correct yourself.

I hope you enjoyed the topic and encourage you to leave comments, if this turns into a flame war then I will have no problem reporting my own topic and having it shut down.

Happy Posting! Image IPB

While I certainly do not disagree with your intent, the site rules are posted at the bottom of every page in the forum.

what makes you think the people who didn't bother to read the rules would actually read this thread?

Preach on, brother! Keep on preachin' to that choir. Amen.

Unfortunately, as well-meaning as it might be, Adria is right...we already have site rules and everyone agrees to them when they create an account. However, if people wish to discuss them, I'll move this over to Off Topic where folks can chat at will.
