I agree Shepard is technically the XO, but someone still has to be in charge while he/she is gone. I assume there are probably 'official' XOs, and unofficial ones given the nature of how the Normandy operates.

Kaidan/Ashley: In charge once they are on board due to rank.

Before they arrive though, I imagine EDI is "technically" the XO, whether people know it or not. She's monitoring everything that goes on the ship, and likely making suggestions both through Joker and Traynor.

During the Palavan->Tuchanka arc, it seems like Garrus is the "technically" XO, at least as far as operations go. He's managing things on the bridge, and when Shepard crashes he remains on the bridge.

As far as who manages the staff, its probably a toss up between Joker [who has ambiguous ranking thanks to leaving for Cerberus], Vega [a promising n7], and Adams. Adams probably has seniority, but I doubt he's going to be leaving the engine room.

Traynor doesn't have the rank, but she does monitor things. Liara is unlikely, just because she's too busy. Javik probably thinks he is this even never leaving his room.

Garrus is my XO, and when he is not around it defaults to Joker and EDI i don't care how the real military opperates but this is how i run my ship.

Though he may not officially be the XO, I always saw Garrus filling that role. Especially with his "I'll make sure Joker doesn't launch any suicide missions" conversation after Tuchanka.

would say it was ashley/keiden, intil she/he is injured and taken to the citadel for treatment, then it seems that the XO was Liara.

They both truly outrank Kaiden/Ashley. Even though they're from two different militaries it shouldn't make a difference. Since the SR2 may be an alliance vessel, all the races are making a JOINT OPERATION.

And don't compare this fictional military system to the current military system today.

Liara is the second highest ranking person on the ship. She has a PMC (Private Military) and she commands it (Shadow Broker.)

It's never mentioned but I think we can assume it's engineer Adams. One could assume the VS but they're in the hospital half the game. Vega perhaps but he never mentions it or assumes any duties as such that we notice. Basically, it's never mentioned or implied so I guess there wasn't one although there should've been.

Well...if they stuck to how it was done ME1, we'd know when Shepard steps back onto the Normandy's deck..but alas ... Bioware took a "militaristic" element I loved and said "screw it" we don't care about "realism"/authenticity..."an XO isn't a feature of the game the players want or that we want...blah blah blah..."

But they do in Joint Operations, Officers of other Nation militaries are saluted and given the same respect as your own Nation's.

Tali is an Admiral, she commands a ship. Garrus is in command of an entire unit.
I imagine if Tali gave an order in Shephard's absence, Garrus would follow it, and everyone below him would too.

Liara being PMC and having no Asari Military experience is viewed as a civilian, no matter how anyone wants to up her rank, she has no official one in the Alliance or Joint Operational sense.

Garrus in my game. Though it's probably good he took over in ME3 and left the operations reports to Miranda in ME2. Lot less red tape when the galaxy is literally collapsing.

No alien´s XO on my Normandy so I guess either Ashley or Joker just gets another function.
...I don´t trust that comm girl traynor. ..lool.. I still miss the "you have a message on your private terminal commander " ..Yeoman Chambers if she was around she could be my Normandy´s XO

Really bro? You missed out the part that I capitilized This is a JOINT OPERATION god dammit! For your ignorance, I will explain; a joint operation is when an army has an operation/mission with another army. Hence making it one army. 1 army+1 army=1 big army. Less CoD please. If you still don't understand, then re-read my post.

You could say Liara is a civi, but she has a lot of power, more of that of an admiral or military advisor. She has the power of a 5 Star General (Top of the food chain.)
