If the Catalyst had never walked out, everyone would have used the crucible, not knowing how it worked or what it would do. Willing to accept whatever consequences came out of it. Something worse than any of the choices could have happened, and people were willing to live with it.
So at what point did things from I'm willing to accept whatever happens to nothing bad can happen I need to be able to sleep at night?
How is it besides the point. Either you're willing to make sacrifices or you're not. If you never saw the Catalyst, used the crucible and killed all the Geth, would you have considered yourself a murderer or having committed genocide. Or would you have looked at it as a sacrifice that served the greater good and saved many more races from being reaped?
The dynamics never changed for me. Why? Because I knew the consequences of inaction. Death for everyone including the Geth anyway.
