This is confusing

To me a bro has always been an someone who 'gets' you and vice versa thus leading to many shenanigans. Essentially all the non-romantic/sexual/etc aspects of a relationship, hence bromance. So in your case i guess a girl would come under the same rules seeing as there is no element of attraction. In which case though bro is still the incorrect word but the sentiment is the same.

Perhaps Brocahontas?

(Also all of that post is just my opinion on the whole bro situation, dunno if others agree)

I must say, Brocahontas is one of the best things ive ever heard.

As for society not expecting you to get being Bro; there is nothing to get. It's a state of being, a way of existing. Being Bro is what one simply is, or, in your case, isn't.

Alot of the people i meet who are ME fans also have the same opinion. Garrus fanboyism seems to be a BSN thing.
