2.) He's been with you from the stat.
3.) He took a missile to the face.
4.) Did I mention he's Garrus?
5.) He's my bro!!!!!

All of this "he's my bro" and "he has my back" talk only reinforces my idea that people like Garrus simply because he never has the audacity to challenge or contradict Shepard. That's not my idea of an awesome character, but other people have different standards, and it's not like BioWare didn't set out to get that exact reaction. Can't fault people for eating it up.
What a load of BS.
So I simply like Garrus because he doesn't contradict me. Really, you got into my head and figured that out? Really? I want your mind reading powers then.
Cut the crap and stop assuming why someone likes a character you don't, it's annoying as hell.
Annoyed you quite a bit, I see. So be it, as they say.

I think I can guess that this is a sore spot where, at some point after ME2 came out, a huge ****storm erupted on the boards between people defending Garrus/Tali joining Shepard and people defending VS not joining him. Since the Virmire supporters are fewer, they take more time to lash out against Garrus and Tali.
Or, you know, we could all just kinda like the characters for who they are without any inane psychobabble.

Way to stereotye fanbases. Both fan bases take shots at each other, always have, probably always will. I'm jsut glad the character's aren't at each other's throats unless he palyer forces them to be.CronoDragoon wrote...

Garrus doesn't challenge Shepard in any real way, he's always nice, supportive and deferential toward Shepard. Garrus never disagrees with Shepard or flouts Shepard's authority. He's loyal to a fault. He is good-naturedly competitive with Shepard in ME3, but it's all very jocular. People like characters who reinforce the idea that the player character is awesome. And Garrus really really likes you. So does Liara. So does Tali. Meanwhile, characters who actually stand up for themselves and have a different point of view, and actually call Shepard on her BS are maligned. One of my favorite characters in ME2 was Tela Vasir, because she called out Shepard for being a total hypocrite, which of course she was. And I loved when Kaidan and Ashley laid the verbal smackdown on Shepard on Horizon, but of course most people were all "Kashley was mean to me! I'm Commander Shepard!!!!!"

I've come to believe this as well. I like Garrus as much as the next guy, but he (And to a lesser extent, Tali) came off as kind of yes-man to me in ME2. I like that he doesn't judge and will support Shepard in his/her decisions, but I prefer characters that will question your motives and not follow you blindly into who-knows-what. I guess that's why I love Kaidan/Ashley and the whole business on Horizon so much. And why Garrus is my Shep's bro while Kaidan is his LI, but that's aside the point.
Garrus did stray away from his seemingly yes-man trait in ME3, though. Now he's government-recognized and commanding his own reaper task force. Little Vakarian is all grown up.

In ME2, he turned into a badass vigilante, taking on the gangs of Omega single-handedly. Shepard's not really that mentor figure to Garrus like in ME1. Garrus is pretty much set in his ways at this point though you can still give him a little nudge toward Paragon or Renegade with the Sidonis situation. Plus, he's the only one (besides Tali) of your old crew to help you on your mission with the Collectors...unlike Ashley/Kaiden, Garrus is like: "You're working with Cerberus? That's messed up but, whatever, I trust you. Let's do this." Liked him a lot in ME2 but still not as much as a lot of people did.
But in Mass Effect 3...I don't know what happened...it all just kinda clicked for me. Garrus had been by my side throughout it all. The type of person he had become, it felt like it was heavily influenced by his time spent with Shepard. After all they went through, Ashley/Kaiden still don't fully trust Shepard...Liara has been a completely different person since ME2...Wrex, I love him, but he's got more important things on his mind as clan leader...no real time to hang out with Shepard anymore...
Garrus and Tali on the other hand...I feel like they might still be kind of lost without the time they spent with Shepard. Garrus might still be stuck at C-Sec, Tali might still be on her pilgrimage (probably not) or dead from Saren's assassin's...
Hanging out with Garrus, shooting bottles on the Citadel (I let him win) just made him feel like a real friend for life; a brother. And that moment on Earth when talking to Garrus about 'Shepard and Vakarian, storming heaven' and meeting up at the bar...it just hit me so unexpectedly hard. I got so choked up at that moment and struggled to hold back tears...that's when I became a huge Garrus Vakarian fan...
...Getting choked up now just thinking about that moment...

Alas, I must sleep too. Even a Bro must rest... but only occasionally.
And with that I must retire as well; Bro out!

EDIT: and for the record Garrus does have issues with you. During the sidonis mission he's ready to rip your head off. Being on a Turian's bad side isn't fun.

That's because Garrus is a massively overrated, honestly-quite-boring character.Wowky wrote...
I'm with the OP, Wrex is my bro. He's just as funny (if not funnier) than Garrus. I still like Garrus though, he's up towards the top of my list in terms of characters I like. I just think Wrex is cooler and kinda gets looked over in favour of Garrus too much.
Not bad, just dull.

I enjoyed how his Character Devloped, in ME1 he was Shepards Protege, In ME2 he was a famous Vigilante, and in ME3 he was recognized by his own government and given a command and brought on as a Reaper specialist
I agree, he's a such a dynamic character and has experienced more fleshing out adn growth than any other character. He's cynical and sarcastic, but he has a heart of gold and will follow you to the depths of hell in his loyalty, trust and optimism. Strange mix.
The Shadow Broker Files even state how under Shepard he'd never grow to become a full leader, but he does grow to become the greatest and most loyal of allies and is eventual given his own leadership position out of sheer determination, which he learned from Shepard. Afterwards, they are the best of freinds still. He's the only one on board with Shepard from day 1 to the very end, never giving any excuses to leave him/her, like Liara, Tali, Wrex, the VS, and basically every other squadmate. The others come and go, Garrus is forever.
Also he has good puns adn innuendo.
