I'm currently playing a 2-Handed Warrior, and up until Orzammar I've literally been taking Alistair EVERYWHERE, since it seems to make sense him being the only remaining Grey Warden besides myself. Now, at the part where you begin the Deep Roads expidition to search for Branka, Oghren joins the party, and I know he has extra dialog and cutscenes in the Deeps, plus it seems to make sense lore-wise, him being Branka's husband. I also want to take Shale, since she's a golem, and we're searching for what created her in the area that created her, and I know there is some dialog at the Anvil. So, Lore-Wise, I'd take Alistair, Oghren, and Shale.
But, being a 2-Handed Warrior with essentially the exact same build as Oghren (Except I'm a Champion and he's a Berserker) it seems... redundant, especially since I only have so many DPS Warrior Accessories (Like rings and amulets) Shale seems like she could be a good choice gameplay wise, since she could play as support, tank, or ranged DPS, and Alistair could tank. Of course, if I take Oghren, that leaves me without a rogue, so, no way to unlock chests. I know Wynne's healing is supposed to be invaluble, but I did Haven before the Circle Tower, and the High Dragon with Alistair, Leliana, and Morrigan (With no healing spells) So I'm not as worried about not having a healer as I am not having a rogue.
All in all, not sure what I should do here. I want to follow what seems to be the story-based route in taking Oghren, but he'd be pretty much pointless since I'm the same thing as him, only I can also buff my party and knockback enemies. Alistair could be pointless as well with Shale in the party, though it would seem weird to just drop the guy I've been playing the whole game with up till this point, especially since we're going deep into the Darkspawn Nests, him being a Grey Warden, though gameplay-wise, he'd just get in the way.
So, I could take Oghren, Shale, and Alistair, (All-Warrior Party) But two tanks and two 2-Handers, even if it would be doable, seems incredibly dull.
I could take Oghren, Shale, and Leliana, adding some variety with her Archery and Unlocky powers, at the expense of ditching Alistair.
I could forget Oghren and just take Shale, Leliana, and Alistair, though, like I said, I'd miss out on extra dialog and such.
My party is currently Level 14 (Close to leveling I believe) and I'm playing on Normal difficulty (PC).

Who you take is, of course, entirely up to you. I will say, however, there will come a point that you'll be forced to take Oghren with you. I agree that, storywise, it makes sense to take Alistair with you. Shale will have some interesting dialogue as well. I always take a healer with me, unless I'm playing a mage, but that's just me. If you're going for story, I'd probably stick with Oghren, Alistair and Shale. Otherwise, I'd consider dropping Alistair or Shale in favor of a rogue.

For a first playthrough I'd take a mage and leave out Shale. I don't know why I'd pick Alistair. Maybe because Shale wasn't available to me when I first got the game since I wasn't on the internet. You have something againt mages?

Personally I always try to take companions that would make sense story-wise for each quest/area, not gameplay-wise. The only reason I'm asking about the Deep Roads is because from what I know, it's a long trudge through five areas, and the Broodmother is supposed to be one of the hardest bosses in the game, so it could likely be more draining then Redcliffe Castle or Haven.
I actually brought both Morrigan and Wynne all through the Circle Tower, since it would make sense to have as many Mages as possible going through a magic-themed area, a subject of which my Warrior basically has no knowledge of.
I don't really see a Mage having a special place in the Deep Roads, especially not Wynne, beyond the gameplay reasons of them being powerhouses, and the only class capable of healing. So, no, nothing against any particular class, I simply try to take companions that would correspond to each area.
I know there are people who solo the entire game on Nightmare with just a Rogue, and I'm playing on Normal with a party of four, so I'm more concerned about not having a Rogue then not having a Mage to be honest, especially since I went through two main quests with only Morrigan's level one heal before I even got Wynne. If I took an all-warrior party, I'd have to leave behind any locked chests or rooms, and blindly stumble over traps. You can use health pots to restore health, but there is no item to unlock chests or detect traps.

I often have that dilemma when entering the Deep Roads, too. Personally, I usually end up swapping Alistair for Zevran or Leliana, because Shale can replace Alistair as a tank, and Alistair doesn't have much to add to that particular quest. Of course, who you ultimately decide to bring is entirely up to you. Also, keep in mind that throughout most of the quest, you can return to Orzammar at any time to swap companions if you feel the need. Good luck!

I'd take Oghren, Shale and Leliana/Zevran. Oghren for the extra dialogue, Shale because this will be important for her (though depending on the choice you want to make at the end, you might not want to take her, after all) and Leli/Zev for the lockpicking. You could always RP it as leaving Alistair behind in case you don't make it, so not all GWs are lost, considering how it's generally looked at as a suicide mission in-game. But I took him last time and he really had nothing to add.

Many thanks for the replies everyone, Fiacre especially for a reason to not bring Alistair, since it does make sense to leave at least one Grey Warden behind, so if I died, there would still be a GW around to off the Archie.
I'm going to take Shale (Tank) Oghren (Damage) and Leliana (Damage, Lockpick, Trap Sweeper). I don't have any worries really, though if anyone has any tips on how to beat the Broodmother with my selected party, that would be great.
I've never actually fought the Broodmother before, though I've seen videos, so I have a basic idea of how the battle works, though I don't have the hands-on experience. I know Leliana should be kept on the rock in the middle of the chamber, off the fleshy bits so the tentacles can't hurt her, and Shale likely grabbing the Mother's attention right up in the front. Anyone have any other tips?

You're welcome
I don't usually have a special tactic for her, but I'd watch the tentacles, those are usually the most annoying part about that fight for me. Otherwise, I just try to kill her as quickly as possible, so I suppose playing a DPS warrior should work out well.

Responding to OP
That is why i don't like min-max character with tank, dps, healer and nuker builds...all my characters can stand alone with varius talents, attributes and role, so i can bring anyone story-wise...i don't have to bring Alistair always, or Wayne always, or Leliana always...of course i will bring rogue for lockpicking if i don't play as rogue (in which i against only rogue can lockpick, i like KoTOR class and cross class mechanic)
I build alistair not necessarily a "tank", and so Morrigan not nesessarily a "nuker", Wayne not nesessarily a "healer", Leliana not nesessarily a "dpser"...i give all companions enough Constitution, Dexterity, Willpower and Strength...i give them "free role"...all talents are open to them, why must limit them into one role only?
Min max characters makes limitation of freedom.
But ofcourse, everyone have their own taste.

Hehe… I'm the complete opposite – I tend to min/max to the extreme!
But, as you said, to each their own.

Actually, there's a mod (called "lock bash") on Dragon Age Nexus that lets you open locked chests as a warrior or rogue – you might find that helpful.

Keeping Leliana away from the broodmother is good. Let her fight with a bow from a safe distance. The other thing to concern yourself with is the darkspawn that will be summoned. Keep your tank focused on the broodmother as much as possible while the others deal with the adds.
