Hi all,
I'm jsut posting to see if i can get to the bottom of an issue i've come up against with my GPU. Basically, I have tried to force a higher Anti Aliasing Setting and Filter setting in my Catalyst Drivers to no avail. It just hasn't worked, infact it has turned off the games AA and AF. I have a good system and would like to play DA in the highest fidelity I can. I've tried the AMD/ATI forums. Done a few searches. But the majority of the moderators their are pretty rude and content to deny any faults in their drivers. Infact from just reading their support forums know i am never going to buy an ATI product again but i would like to ask in here if anyone knows any fixes or if i'm barking up the wrong tree.
I have a XFX HD4870, 4Gb RAM, Quad Core 2.66Ghz, and Win7 64bit (could it be my OS?)
Any help or advice would be really appreciated.
PS I notice ATI pushing their new Anti-Aliasing algorithm for their new cards all the time. Doesn;t make a jot of differance if the card can't impliment it on games though.
Thanks Again,
Andy

You can force those (and it's far better to do so) via the game's .ini file.

- I've got a 4850, and I've been able to force anisotropic filtering on the game (I use the in-game AA settings), but it only works if you actively set the value, not if it's on when you start up. The trick that works for me is right clicking on the Catalyst tray icon and selecting "Extended Desktop" under the Radeon menu item before I start the game. This causes the screen to briefly flicker and seems to poke the Catalyst settings to get applied.
- VSync works through both the game and the drivers, but triple buffering isn't on, cuz Catalyst only uses that for OpenGL, not DirectX. The solution is to run a program called D3DOverrider, which forces triple buffering on for DirectX when you use VSync (not worth syncing without it, IMO). D3DOverrider is part of the RivaTuner tweak tool at www.guru3d.com/category/rivatuner/, but it's a standalone app. I don't use RivaTuner itself, so I just installed it, made a copy of D3DOverrider, and uninstalled RivaTuner again.

Ahh i'll give it a go Mongoose22. I have D3DOverdrive for The Witcher. Its unplayable without VSync. So i'll enable it for DA. I'll also try out the .ini tweaks Jiron and try giving the drivers a poke like yous aid Mongoose. Do I use the extended desktop option before or after loading the game?
Also i can;t believe i have todo this just to get driver settings to work. (I have always bought nVidia over ATI and this is my first ATI product and i've never had such annoying drivers in the past. I am impressed with the performance though. The card only cost me about a £100 on eBuyer)

As much as ATi's hardware advancement is now more powerful and more affordable than nVidia's, I still find ATi's Drivers to be the worst. Their drivers hinder all the potential in their really good cards and only 20% of all the good games out there are actually optimized for ATi cards. I had an ATi back then I was not hating it cause of the actual hardware. I hated Catalyst with a passion. Therefore if you want smooth gameplay without the driver fuss. I'd stick with nVidia, despite their price, constant rebadging, tricky naming and dating hardware.

I got an ATI HD R6850 OC from MSI. In Games like NWN 2 and DA:O i must deactivate Antialising. If i don't the games are unplayable because of extremely low FPS. First i thought it was some kind of missing software for ati support, but reinstalling doesn't help.
It seems that the 2D elemets of this games are also antialiased (maybe this is the problem?).
I wish i had 2 pci-e Slots to use my old GF 8800. With that old thing i had no Problems anywhere /=
Ill try to start the Game with different settings ingame and with Catalyst.

Older games often do not play well with newer drivers and hardware. It is a sad fact of life. You might try an older set of drivers for your card.
