While the idea has some merit, it has more problems than merits.
The problems include

• Doing it tastefully, even though the DA games have covered it the Pearl and the Blooming Rose were more about jokes than seriously.
• male prositiutes in the middle ages? not saying it didn't happen, but ..

Player: (Looks at the hud again, and notices the injury remains.) " S*** why the heck is that still there?!"
(Checks the status screen for the name of the ailment.) " The clap?! When the heck did i get this?":?

Player: " Fml." (Logs on to BSN after exhausting every knowable method to curing status ailments, and posts a thread about it.) "I don't know when, but my pc has caught the clap. How do you get rid of it?"

More seriously, I think a prostitute origin would actually be interesting, but given that it's such a sensitive topic, I think there are just too many ways that it could go horribly wrong. Still, it's an interesting idea.

Dragon Age is not set in the middle ages, and the Pearl and the Rose both offer male prostitutes to their clientele. Or did you think Jethann was an interior decorator?

It certainly wouldn't be my first choice, but it could make an interesting character to role-play, if it was done well.

just don't put on the box "now you can play as a prostitute" otherwise Fox will have a field day

I think it would probably work better if perhaps a slaver or someone sold you into prostitution, but you escape by stealth or fighting your way out before you have to "do the deed", rather than actually having a prostitute origin prologue, simply because no matter how you portray that sort of life it's gonna cause a lot of controversy, especially in a game.

I wouldn't have a problem playing a character that had actually chosen to be a sex worker for awhile, but I would need for that character to not act like s/he is still on the job in the animations and cinemas - if you know what I mean...  Even Hawke's hip sashay was overdone for my taste.

Yeah I know what you mean, I'd be concerned that the character would be in danger of becoming a parody, acting like Jethann and the other Blooming Rose hookers when they're "on the job" except the protagonist would be like it constantly, with tons of innuendos at inappropriate times etc lol.

... That being said, it would be quite amusing the first time round lol.

 I like the Idea,but I think it wouldn't fit into every story,it would fit perfectly as Hawke when he gets to Kirkwall or as common dwarf in DAO(eww i just got a bad image in my head and it can't get out,anyways...).But if you are helping the seekers in DA3 i doubt you will be able to prostitute yourself as a seeker,maybe before you become a  seeker,it would definitly bring out some funny dialoge.Anyways interesting idea,but i doubt Bioware would do such a thing becouse EA wants money out of children(Wide audience,we want everybody to pay money to us,EA psyhology) so they reduce the sex in Bioware games(First it was underwear sex,now we just get black screens,maybe DA III won't even have sex talks and no blood so it can be rated 3+ so that EA can get money from little children!).But interesting indeed,i would like to see an interesting option like that in an RPG.

I'm playing Witcher 2 at the moment and I'm well and truly suffering from boob overload.

Any prostitute origin could only worsen the RPG boob overload issue, i don't want people to walk in on me playing Dragon Age 3 and think i'm playing some sort of dodgy second life sex sim.

I didn't interpret the idea of having been a prostitute to mean that the game would show nude sex scenes, or scenes of the protag at work in their former occupation - only that it would be the character's past, and if any origin story was to be shown at all, it wouldn't really include on-the-job scenes.

Did anyone else play the dwarven commoner origin in DA:O as a female? Your drunken mother straight up tells you something like "You've got one copper to your name and it's between your legs."  

I wouldn't put anything past Gamlen, but it really wouldn't have been a viable way of restoring the Amell name.

Anyway, while prostitution is definitely part of the lore, I think featuring a hooker protagonist would lean dangerously close to glamorizing it as a profession. Which, with the human sex trafficing problem our world is dealing with today, would be in seriously poor taste. Bioware's other option would be to devote a good chunk of the character development toward said protag emotionally and psychologically recovering from the trauma of that kind of life. And is that really the game we want to play? Interesting concept, but no thanks. We get a touch of that every now and then anyway by being able to sleep our way through quests ('thanks for the tumble and the specialization, Isabela!")

Although... becoming an ex-prostitute BA hero in The Next Thing and being able to import our character into Grand Theft Auto so we can turn the tables and beat up a GTA protagonist and leave his body in a van for a change... now that sounds like fun.

^^ Excellent points, and things I hadn't really thought through, probably because of the way I had conceptualized it. I just thought it might be interesting / different to role-play a character who had done that.

So - I think I'll say, "no thanks".

It has some limited charm but if they DO make new Origins I'd prefer they actually had something to do with the plot, yah know? Though I suppose there are ways to tie a prostitute in... hmmmmm... maybe not a prostitute exactly, but like a bardy/seductress assassin! Totally more interesting.

Playing a normal prostitute sounds a bit too depressing, and too little to do with the story for me.

But playing a bard on a seduction mission to get information that leads you to the main plot, or said mission is unrelated but interrupted by say, someone being assassinated/bursting in/ having a fight which is all relevent to the main quest and your brought in that way?  That sounds like fun, espeacially if the seduction is just one of the ways you can choose to go about getting your information/goal.

Similarily Lolalei's suggestion would also be better that a normal prostitution origin, your character could escape with a plot relevent char or run into a significant event as they escape.

Yeah now I just really want a Bard Origin
