After several playthroughs, I've found myself unable to ditch Alistair for Loghain at the landsmeet.  It's not that I'm particularly fond of Alistair, or particularly not fond of Loghain.  I just constantly find myself keeping Alistair and leaving the Teyrn to his fate, and I would love someone to change my mind so I can get the achievement for every having ending.. and yes, we know Alistair is whiney.

I've found that it was easier to get rid of Alistair with a main character who was selfish, obnoxious and treacherous.

On topic, I have not put Loghain in any party of mine. However, this makes me like him just a little bit.

Loghain: Here, some smoked boar saved from supper.  Huh, it'll do you good.
Dog: (Excited huffing)
Loghain: I had a mabari once.  Adalla--that was her name.  We found her in the wood shed one night.  She was still a pup then.
Loghain: We never figured out where she came from.  My mother called her a gift from the Maker.  And she was... she really was.
Loghain: She was beautiful; she had a lovely chestnut brown coat, and the most intelligent, understanding eyes.  You would have liked her.
Dog: (He wags his tail.)
Loghain: We grew up together.  She never left my side, not once.  Ten years we had her, before she was taken away...
Dog: (He ****s his head and looks curiously at Loghain.)
Loghain: Another time perhaps.  Finish your snack.

With Loghain I know who is killing the archdemon. There is never any doubt in my mind. And it happens that way every time. Alistair always tries to be noble.

For me the happy ending is Alistair is king married to Anora. Loghain kills the archdemon. Morrigan spends a celibate night before the dragon dies and my PC goes off somewhere (best ending was dwarf commoner where she became a living Paragon) either with Lelianna or Zevran.

Loghain makes the happy ending possible.

Okay, srsly.



At his heart his only concern is the protection of Ferelden, by any means necessary. He was around when the Orlesians ruled with an iron fist, and fought to free Ferelden from their grasp. As such, with a King only interested in gaining glory, he took matters into his own hands.



Additionally, if you spare him, he does repent, but I don't want to get into that too much and ruin it for you.

Well, that's all well and good, but on this playthrough Loghain is the guy that authorized the storming and slaughter of my alienage's orphange, had the leader of my alienage and half the healthy population shackled as slaves and shipped off to Tevinter (who knows what they did to the sick), and almost did the same thing with my father and cousin.

What was his explanation - something about, "sacrifices must be made?" I agree. Him first.

I thought Riordan brought up some good points that I forgot in my initial post.

Loghain is ultimately, forever and a day, fanatically locked into protecting Ferelden.  Useful traits for a GW.

He's a brilliant tactician and leader, quite useful for the upcoming battle.

He's a hero to the people at large who do not know of his more recent ickiness and his inclusion would raise public morale.

His joining the Wardens would also dispell any residual doubts about them really being traitors.

Due to some slight digging around, I think I know the significance of that story and all I will say is

I am looking forward to some upcoming playthroughs where my characters are going to spare him. Also looking forward to reading the books which I know I am getting for Christmas

Well other than the fact that he is the hero who freed Ferelden from the Orlesians and other than the fact that he is a tacitical and military genius without which Maric wouldn't have gotten far. And other than the fact that he is an utter badass. And other than the fact that he is an interesting character.
He also has a good set of armor you can sell.

Well part of being a badass is doing nasty things sometimes, that might be necessary.

I personally don't brush aside his wrongdoings, as he doesn't do so either. He knows what he did was wrong and he doesn't strike me as self righteous at all. In fact, you can detect a slight note of shame when you talk with him, especially when you are nice.
