so far I have found this game to be pretty cool, Age of Conan, was a huge disappointment, so I was hoping this would fill my gap in sword and sorcery gaming but, I find the combat system a little to be desired, most of it is cool I like the way we can set the "tactics" for the AI controlled companions, BUT I wish that when you were in control of your main "persona" or when you take over one of your "companions"  it was real time combat, in other words, when I want to swing my sword, I have to hit a key/mouse button,  while the rest of your party goes by the "tactics" you set for them.
personaly I think this little change in the game would be HUGE, and make a much better experience and more immersive game play.

this is also something that should not be to hard to impliment in a patch HINT HINT

It's an RPG. Your success or failure in combat is therefore primarily stat-driven. How well you (the player) swing a sword or trace magical formulae on the screen have any impact at all wouldn't make any sense.

Imagine playing a game where your character was an elite space marine, but you couldn't aim weapons well. He'd miss everything. That would be stupid...

What Sylvius said ^^

In an RPG it should be the characters strength and dexterity that decides the outcome and not the players. The players job is not to swing the sword it is to craft the character and direct the playing of the characters role as the character iteracts with the world provided.

Actually, such a system works quite well in Fallout 3, Mass Effect, Oblivion and the Gothic series for example (and yes, I do consider them to be RPGs). That said, DA has another approach, and I'm thankful for that. Not every game has to be actionified (to please the console audience) even more.

This is a tactical RPG. Not an action/FPS RPG.

There's a reason as to why weapons have certain attack speeds, stats, ect....

And aside from the basic autoattack, you DO have to hit a button to use a special attack/item/spell.

I've found that in the larger battles there do seem to be some timing issues where it can be difficult to know what is going on, between the movement of mobs and npcs, and the timing of various attacks, there comes a point where nothing is happening... it seems like it is better to just let the computer handle all the melee stuff so it can work through all the timing issues... maybe my laptop is just a bit dated...i dunno...

The game you are looking for already exists.  It's called Morrowind and it's pretty cheap to buy the game itself and the 2 expansions.  If you are looking for the same thing but better eye candy than try Oblivion but be warned that you will need a whole lot of mods to make the game enjoyable.

ya know what I think I understand what you guys are saying...I own morrowwind plus the expansion packs also Oblivion and around 50 mods, been playing it too long plus heavily modded it tends to crash a lot gets me pissed off lol, my mainstay in gaming is Aces High, but I very much enjoy swinging a sword hehe, I am not gonna give up on this one just yet.

thanx for your comments.

You are asking for an Action game, at best an Action RPG, like Diablo.

DA is a real RPG and there we dont like clicking again and again on the opponent just to inform the computer "OMG please do a auto attack". We assume the computer is able to do that on its own.

Has nothing to do with whether it's an RPG or not.  You don't swing your weapons, and combat is primarily stat-driven in RTS and TBS games as well.

Playing as a 2h warrior you already have to time your special attacks otherwise you'll interrupt your normal ones.
Playing dragon age as a buttonbash game would definately not work well, since it would make it a hack and slash game. Worked pretty well in viking battle for asgard but it takes out all the finesse of the game.

Works fine in games with rpg elements but aren't 100% rpg, like mass effect. No matter how you look at it, it's a shooter with a lot of great elements added to it. But it's still a shooter. What you want is a hack and slash game.
