Personally, I've been through a great many RPGs over the years. Ultima I and so forth (skipped a few towards the end), Final Fantasy series., Wing Commander, etc.

What strikes me most of all about DA is how much it reminds me of an old game call Darklands by Microprose. It is in many ways very similar, save the number of years in between that they were made and the level of detailed artwork.

So what does DA remind you of?

Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption.

I.e the first RPG that I played that made me realise that storyline and gameplay could walk hand in hand to make absolute awesomeness.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption is one of my all time favorite RPGs. Great game. And DA does remind me of it quite a bit. It even had tactical-ish settings you could set. Though the system wasn't quite good enough and the AI would just waste their blood (mana).

Some combination of FFXII (I never played, I just saw the Gambit system in action), NWN 2, and WoW.

FFXII for the gambit/tactics system

NWN2 (and really any past bioware game) for the dialog options.

WoW for the ability usage and cooldown as well as the separation between mana and stamina.

Vampire Redemption was great i really like the WoD setting but to me DA just reminds me of BG2. Simple as that. If thats what Bioware were going for then they succeded in hitting my nostalgia button. Dispite its flaws to me it rates up their with BG2 and Planescape:Torment. Its the RPG i've been wanting to play for years.

Final Fantasy 8 is a close 4th because of its setting, characters and soundtrack. I still listen to the opening theme of the dollet mission sometimes (The Landing is it?). Its amazing what they could do with the PSones soundcard.

Dragon Age reminds you of....

1. the start of every Bioware game since KOTOR

hey you are a Jedi!

hey you are you a spectre!

etc.,

2. the plot of LOTR...at least they changed the name of the major city, the uncrowned king, and call orcs, darkspawn

Only without the amnasia or the military training.

Nice try but must try harder. F.

^ This.

The only original plot thus far has been was way back and started, of course, with the Baldur's Gate series.

I remember Stonekeep. The game's intro was amazing back then. It was Stonekeep why I bought my first CD -ROM drive back then ;)

I actually downloaded and played that again several months back, running in a tiny 640x480 window in the middle of my desktop, straining my eyes to see something. I remember getting to the big, black monolithic type place with the Skeletons on my first playthrough ages ago and getting stuck. Having played it again recently, with a walkthrough on hand, I don't know how in the sam bloody hell I figured out the puzzles to reach that point, nor how I was supposed to figure out the rest of them to finish the game.

My god that game was...absolutely awful. But, nostalgia can do that. Better to just leave well enough alone sometimes.

I'm assuming here that your eyesight is good enough to see a foot and a half to your monitor. Otherwise I apologize for taking the ******. Human nobles have an automatic skill in Shield Bash if Warrior or Dirty Fighting if rogue. The rest of the talents are left upto the player. These choices seem reasonable to me concidering the origin and classes background. Dalish Elf Warriors get pinning shot. Not unfitting for their background as hunters. City Elves get Dual Weapon Sweep perhaps this should be different i'll give you this. Dalish and City Rogues get Dirty Fighting a pretty common skill. Not necesarily a part of military training of any sort nor inconsistant with their backgrounds. Dwarven Warriors get Dual Weapon Sweep perhaps it could ahve been something else but i would assume an Aeudacan receives some basic training in some weapon tree. Aeuducan's being descended from the warrior caste. Commoners get Shield Bash and more combat talent skills not out of place concidering dust town being a particularly harsh area to live. All Dwarven Rogues get Dirty Fighting as well. Also not within the bounds of their background and class and not necessarily a part of military training. Mages obviously get no weapon training.

So lets recap...incase you forgot. All warrior classes get a weapon skill in their origin. Rogues and Mages do not. It isn't dependent on origin at all. It depends on class. Also I see no reason why a character as part of the warrior class wouldn't be trained in some aspect of fighting. This is a single talent after all. You are little more than a grunt at the time you are recruited.

Perhaps level progression could go slower. The increase in power is pretty swift.

I will still apply to your newsletter though. January should be a fun month for us idiots.

I could see it reminding you of Darklands. It doesn't really remind me of anything specific except perhaps the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale series. Beyond that it has elements of Dungeon Siege. The first party-based games I remember playing with fully-realized tactical combat were probably the gold box games by SSI in the '80s and '90s.

Some of the games people are listing here are not what I'd consider RPGs, though.  Hexen and Hexen 2, for example, were just fantasy-themed Doom.

Reminds me most of Drakensang. Gameplay, look and feel, graphics, colors, everything. I think the German devs beat Bioware by a year or so. Although, I think DAO is at least a little bit better and more engaging than Drakensang.

But both DAO and Drakensang are very clearly soulmates.

Apparently i'm young enough to remember buying Ultima:Ascension and realising what a naff game it was. I was interest in Ultima Online 2 until they canned it though.

Honestly? The first RPG I played was Crystalis on the NES. However, DA:O doesn't really remind me of it.
