well... EA was considered fairly evil by a lot of gamers because of their decision to cancel all of Origin's projects.

I missed Wing Commander especially.

If that makes you old then I guess I'm old as well.  ^_^

Star Controll II

DA:O doesn't remind me of Star Control II, but that is one of my favorite games ever.  The fact that the series is dead is....*frumple*.

I'm in the "Wing Commander is a Flight Sim RPG" category, too! I <3 Angel! =D

DA:O looks like NWN2 and plays like a slow FFXII with less gear, generic magic, lots of gore - except the Gambits all work intelligently in FFXII. I heard about March 9th the other day and - jonesing a little - started up another playthru of FFXII. Tactics are an epic fail facsimile of the Gambits system.

Was it EA that canned Ultima Online 2? I really wanted to play that! Had to make do with...hell i don;t even remember what my first MMO was. Eve Online i think.

Standard Bioware plot structure:

Early game forces you into joining peace-keeping force, even though we're giving you the option of playing evil. You become this special hero with powers. We reveal that there is a big bad threat, that you need to go to 4 places to stop, in whatever order you choose. Along the way, your companions will reveal their history is small slices, peeling away layer after layer. Once you go to the 4 places, then you have a final showdown with the villain.

EA canceled two separate Ultima Online projects. I believe both got nearly 3 years of development before being cancelled. Way to throw tons of money away, just to irk your customers!

Both games though barely resembled any Ultima game and had little respect for any Ultima lore.

Ah, Ultima. Good times, good times.

Strangely enough, the one that most often comes to mind for me is Lord of the Rings: The Third Age. I know, it's the obvious one...but Loghain instantly reminded me of Grima Wormtongue and I can't get that association out of my head now. Ugh.

It's the way the character looks in the game. I got that too

Shining Force 2, tactics for sure, but the over all tone is fairly similar in my mind.

So lets recap...incase you forgot. All warrior classes get a weapon skill in their origin. Rogues and Mages do not. It isn't dependent on origin at all. It depends on class. Also I see no reason why a character as part of the warrior class wouldn't be trained in some aspect of fighting. This is a single talent after all. You are little more than a grunt at the time you are recruited.

Perhaps level progression could go slower. The increase in power is pretty swift.

I will still apply to your newsletter though. January should be a fun month for us idiots.

Glad to see you prove my point and agree with the fact you are an idiot.  If you want to continue embarrassing yourself go right ahead I have had my fill doing it for the night.

cranking up the Wayback machine for my Sega Genesis emulator.  some of those SF2 battles were a tremendous pain in the ass even using all the tips and tricks.  DAO is cruise control comparatively speaking.

I'd say DA remonds me of

Baldur's Gate 2 (Never played BG1, that would probably qualify, too. Adventuring with your group in the overhead view definitely has a BG feeling, and the two main cities are kind of similar)

KOTOR (because of of thedialog and party system. Also what enderandrew said)

Drakensang (ok, both are recent fantasy group adventuring rpg. But beyond that some locations are kind of similar. Orzammar looks a bit like a bigger and better Xorlosch)

What is going on with ct and andyr? Are they rl mates who are having a go at each other via the internet or something?

"Malicious sons of Satan"  would still be fairly polite, all things considered.

Bubble Bobble. I'm surprised Namco didn't sue. The music in DA:O isn't as awesome though.

(also all the usual RPG suspects, but especially The Witcher)

It doesn't remind me of Star Control II either except they are both excellent games.

Toys for Bob wants to make a sequel but Activision won't let them. They want them to churn out baby games like the trained monkeys they are.

Guild Wars replica

Starwars Galaxies Replica

WoW Replica

EverQuest Replica

All mixed together into one game in some sort of way, they included the bugs and not finished game idealogy as well.

Except for that I still like playing DA:O, but a bit disappointed about not making it an actual Bioware game.

It reminds me of NWN2 and Drakensang.

Mainly how the environments are so limited and linear, as opposed to single player RPGs with open worlds like Oblivion, Gothic3, or Two Worlds.

Of course if we must chase the creation... probably LoTR as a setting and D&D for making us all RPG nuts..... can you imagine there were times when RPGers were considered satanic and demonic cultists and all that crap? And now it is mainstream.... who's burning on the stake now, grumpies?

My mother never told me DnD would make me satanic... she just warned me if I played these games, I'd never find a woman that wanted to be with me... and I here I am, 30... and single...

I hate you, Mom.
