Definetly hair up. I'm probably the only odd ball here but I found her more interesting and attractive before the redesign. She was different and it really suited her character.

And anyway, games need a lot more normal looking characters out there (and I'm not talking about random, nameless NPCs) : always being surrounded by male and female supermodels feels way over the top; its just silly (unless ME4 is about Shepard leaving the army and starting a career in fashion design).

I also preferred her hair up. I was really hoping it would be like the concept art she had for ME3. Hell Ash with a ponytail would've been awesome too...

I agree with this.  For someone who is so hardcore about being a soldier, wearing a sexy outfit and having her hair all down and styled doesn't seem very characteristic of her.  Also, her face is very naturally beautiful and doesn't really need to be "done up" with makeup.  I dated a girl like that for several years: people would always ask her what type of makeup she used even though she had never worn makeup a day in her life.

Regardless if her hair is up, or down something is off about her jaw, and chin compared to ME, ME 2.

I preferred Ash with her hair in a bun, like in ME1 and ME2. I think it fits her character better.

That said, I'm good with her redesign for the most part, but I wish it were possible to have her put her hair in a bun. Even if she has it down on the Normandy, at least one of her outfits (perhaps the blue armour) should give Ash her ME1/ME2 hairstyle.

This. ME1 Ashley > ME3 Ashley. For me at least.

I mean I can understand why she looked that way at the beginning of the game: because she is at a military summit, not on a battlefield. That'd be cool, because then you'd think "Damn, she cleans up good!" Then of course when she got back on the Normandy, it would be back to hair pulled up and combat armor.

On the battlefield, the long hair and makeup really doesn't do it for Ashley. If a chick walked up to me looking like that and said "I'm Alliance Marine Corp," I'd be like "shyeah, ok....hehe"

Correction:

Hair up on missions and Normandy. Hair down in romance scene(s).

Yeah, something is odd about her face, regardless of aesthetics, I just can't figure exactly what.

Anyway, oddly enough, Ashley seems to be the only Alliance soldier with long hair on the Normandy.
Gabby has short hair, dr. Chakwas has short hair, Traynor has (relatively) short hair... heck, even EDI's platform sports a relatively light "haircut".

I've got nothing against long hair per se, just when it doesn't fit with the rest of the scene, or the character.
I mean, would you imagine Mordin in a t-shirt with large baggy pants and sports shoes on (or a Salarian equivalent anyway) ? Sure, you might say its his decision and that its a sign of a dynamic, living personality but it simply trumps over his already established personality. Change happens, yes, but its harmonic, fluid and natural.

I prefer both of them.

I don't really see the problem with her hair down.

Best possible option would be hypothetical situation in which BW implemented more dynamic character designs so she has her hair in a bun in combat situations and down in other situations.

Also, I think there is no need for her hair to be up in a bun while aboard the Normandy since she is not doing anything physical where her hair would get in the way, unlike in ME 1.
Not to mention she is a Spectre and its the end of the world...

I actually don't care much from an aesthetic standpoint, but the fact that her personality shifted with her hair change (she seems so damn quiet and overall really subdued in ME3) makes me prefer her how she was in the first two games, in all regards.

I know that really isn't fair, but I can't help making the connection.

I'm on the PS3 so I only saw Ashley on Horizon in ME2 and she seemed like a complete b**** and she didn't look good.. But now in ME3 she's still a b****, but her look fits her personality now, IMO.

I preferred her with the bun. She was an original character in the sense that she wasn't a mega feminine romance. In ME2 Ashley jumps ship (literally) and the more tomboyish choice is Jack. In ME3, two things are apparently true: A) This galaxy isn't big enough for two romancable tomboys-- Jack is kept (sort of), and Ashley's kicked out of the clan of rage-filled awesomeness; and B) Going further up the chain of command must mean that instead of "calming down", so to speak, she (Ashley) "revs up" her appearance for some reason. While I don't want to get too stereotypical, I do find that as you get older, most people flaunt a little bit less of themselves (i.e. less makeup, less low-cuts) as it is more professional.

The fact of the matter is that, for Ashley's presented character in ME1, the change is somewhat unrealistic.

But maybe that's just my nit-picking because I never got to romance her with femshep. :P

Out of combat: whatever she likes.

In combat: hair up.

Simple as that.

I love her hair either way, but I think she needs to have her hair in a ponytail or bun when wearing actual armor.

I realy don't like what they did with Ashley on ME3. Where is the women from ME1? when she was interesting. She was already beatiful, she didn't need a change of hair and appearence.
When I first saw her on ME3, I wasn't even able to recognize her.
