Ashley Williams - Hair Up or Hair Down?

And anyway, games need a lot more normal looking characters out there (and I'm not talking about random, nameless NPCs) : always being surrounded by male and female supermodels feels way over the top; its just silly (unless ME4 is about Shepard leaving the army and starting a career in fashion design).

Definetly hair up. I'm probably the only odd ball here but I found her more interesting and attractive before the redesign. She was different and it really suited her character.

I agree with this. For someone who is so hardcore about being a soldier, wearing a sexy outfit and having her hair all down and styled doesn't seem very characteristic of her. Also, her face is very naturally beautiful and doesn't really need to be "done up" with makeup. I dated a girl like that for several years: people would always ask her what type of makeup she used even though she had never worn makeup a day in her life.

I also preferred her hair up. I was really hoping it would be like the concept art she had for ME3. Hell Ash with a ponytail would've been awesome too...
I agree Ponytail would have looked cool

I preferred Ash with her hair in a bun, like in ME1 and ME2. I think it fits her character better.
That said, I'm good with her redesign for the most part, but I wish it were possible to have her put her hair in a bun. Even if she has it down on the Normandy, at least one of her outfits (perhaps the blue armour) should give Ash her ME1/ME2 hairstyle.
This. ME1 Ashley > ME3 Ashley. For me at least.

On the battlefield, the long hair and makeup really doesn't do it for Ashley. If a chick walked up to me looking like that and said "I'm Alliance Marine Corp," I'd be like "shyeah, ok....hehe"

Hair up in missions. Hair down on the Normandy.
Correction:
Hair up on missions and Normandy. Hair down in romance scene(s).

Regardless if her hair is up, or down something is off about her jaw, and chin compared to ME, ME 2.
Yeah I have notice that too. Looks weird.

Yeah, something is odd about her face, regardless of aesthetics, I just can't figure exactly what.
Anyway, oddly enough, Ashley seems to be the only Alliance soldier with long hair on the Normandy.
Gabby has short hair, dr. Chakwas has short hair, Traynor has (relatively) short hair... heck, even EDI's platform sports a relatively light "haircut".
I've got nothing against long hair per se, just when it doesn't fit with the rest of the scene, or the character.
I mean, would you imagine Mordin in a t-shirt with large baggy pants and sports shoes on (or a Salarian equivalent anyway) ? Sure, you might say its his decision and that its a sign of a dynamic, living personality but it simply trumps over his already established personality. Change happens, yes, but its harmonic, fluid and natural.

I don't really see the problem with her hair down.
Best possible option would be hypothetical situation in which BW implemented more dynamic character designs so she has her hair in a bun in combat situations and down in other situations.
Also, I think there is no need for her hair to be up in a bun while aboard the Normandy since she is not doing anything physical where her hair would get in the way, unlike in ME 1.
Not to mention she is a Spectre and its the end of the world...

I know that really isn't fair, but I can't help making the connection.

The fact of the matter is that, for Ashley's presented character in ME1, the change is somewhat unrealistic.
But maybe that's just my nit-picking because I never got to romance her with femshep.

In combat: hair up.
Simple as that.

She clearly looks better in ME2 here
