Will my computer run this smoothly at medium/high settings?

 I have a late 2009 iMac with the following:
CPU: Intel Core Duo 2 3.0 ghz
RAM: 4GB DDR3 1067 hz
GPU: Nvidia GeForce 9400M

I plan to install Windows 7, which is why I've posted on the PC forum. I'm not expecting ultra settings obviously, but can I pull off medium or high settings with AA off, texturing off, and sub 1080p?

Thanks for any advice!

Not with that poor excuse for a graphics card, no. You will have to put either the image quality or the screen resolution to a low setting, after which you may be able to go medium for the other of those two.

Simply because you're more likely to run into someone who has done the same thing as you plan to. Isn't there an aftermarket graphics upgrade option for Apple systems?

Unfortunately no :( My understanding is that iMac GPU's usually can't be upgraded. But I need to look more closely into this. I'm really not a PC gamer, but since I love this game on the PS3, I've been wanting to upgrade to the PC to use the toolset. I just don't want to have to buy a new computer just to play the PC version...oh well. Maybe I'll just deal with low settings, and transfer my saves to a better PC if I ever get one. Thanks.

If I upgrade to ATI Radeon HD 4670 256MB, would I be able to get high settings at 1080p with AA and texturing off?

I can get the desired performance with a 5770, so you should be able to get close in terms of 'horsepower'. However, as an older spec (i.e. the 46xx rather than 57xx/67xx/etc etc) I'm not sure how it will handle DirectX and Shader requirements....

The Radeon HD 4670 was an excellent card at an excellent price, and sat on the pinnacle of the Toms Hardware "Bang for the Buck" charts for a year and a half. Given that the Geforce 9400s were only 8500s with a new name, when the GT 200 series was very slow to spawn its lower and middle cards (the 220 and 240 were late to market), the 4670 is two generations newer than the 9400.

Where a 9400 is a fence-sitter between Low End and Gamer-playing, compared to the practical minimum Geforce (8600 GS or 7600 GT), the HD 4570 is well on up above the minimum (practical) Radeon, the X1650 XT, closer to the HD 3850 Recommended Level than to the minimum.

If you can get one, it is a nice improvement.

P. S.  I forgot to say, yes, it will give medium-high results in image quality, at medium resolutions, or just plain medium image quality at high screen resolutions settings.

Thanks guys! I'm looking into other Gpus that may work well without making my CPU the bottleneck. I would love high settings at 1080p (AA off and texturing low), so hopefully I can find a gpu that's a bit more powerful than the 4670.

Medium Quality graphics cards typically include a memory system with a 128 bit limit, which effectively cuts them off from proper use of onboard VRAM past 512 MBs. One of the things that makes a low end card what it is, they have only 64-bit memory systems (I can't recall the 8500 / 9400 bit-width -- it might be either 64 bit or 128).

For the HIGH (HD) screen resolutions, you need full access to 512 MBs of VRAM all the time, and occasional use of a full GB of VRAM. That puts you in the High End group, where you get 256-bit memory system bandwidth. The HD 4850 offered that, as does the HD 5830 - upward, and HD 6850-upward.

Even the 4670 would probably not be fast enough to run the game properly at 1080p. If you're going to knock down the texture detail, what's the point of running the game at 1080p at all?

And Gorath, you don't necessarily need a 256 bit memory bus width for Dragon Age: Origins. The 4850 did have 256 bit memory, but the thanks to faster GDDR5 memory the Radeon HD 5770 had much the same overall memory bandwidth. I expect the modern 7750 and 7770 would have similar bandwidth to the 4850 as well.
