Hes an indispensible member of my team, regardless of my PC choice.
Personality wise, hes a virgin - a bit prudish, but wholeheartedly a good person. Any conjecture otherwise is a bit odd.

In my games, if it were possible, I could ask him to leave the very first time we go to the Party Camp, and I wouldn't miss him, and we might level up faster because we wouldn't have to eat his cooking. He is selfish, and self centered. No matter what the PC has to go through to get to being a Warden, his experience at Ostagar is worse. He lies to the PC outright about who he is, despite having to know that he's the best option to get Loghain out of power. He only tells you on the way to Redcliffe, if you have him with you. If not, you find out from Eamon and Teagan that he's the heir to the throne, and both of them seem surprised you don't know.Fanghorne wrote...
Alistair is a great tank. Set up right, and the right gear, and smart tactics...he can tank a revenant at level 9 without using a single heal pot.

He does this out of his selfish need to not be viewed differently by the PC, who, if you do Redcliffe late, playing a female, may even be actively romancing him. Protecting his little secret is more important to him than honesty, and after you find out, he now has something new to whine about. The self-replenishing box of Kleenex in my sig was coined specifically for Alistair.

I have found Sten to be quite effective as a tank, even w/out respec. It still takes some patience, and investing in/finding good gear, but he can hold his own quite well. Yeah, I have to take a heal spell on Morrigan, and I'm going to spend a lot making potions to keep him afloat, but that doesn't change the fact that he can indeed maintain threat, and that's all that is required to tank.
Yeah, I did that. I didn't have the mod yet, and I wanted to ditch Alistair, so Sten it was. It took me a while to figure out which armor to stick him in early on, I always seemed to have made the wrong choice. Same with some other gear.
And poor Morrigan. I don't think being forced into a healer suited her, and if she could, I would've stared at a bit "Morrigan disapproves -25". And to add insult to injury, she was also the one who had to make all the healing potions. I almost felt a bit sorry for her

I usually just give her the first spell in that line. I haven't had the heart to spec her to Spirit Healer. Although, that would be amusing. I don't even make her an Arcane Warrior, although I did consider it on one of my current games, even took the spec with that in mind, I just haven't done so yet. I also don't do the Str/Dex build that seems popular, preferring to raise his Con instead, since the idea is he's going to get hit, his physical resistance might as well be as high as I can get it. Good bad or indifferent according to the forums, it works well for me.Sabriana wrote...

I respec Morrigan right in front of Flemeths hut, first thing I do with her. Then I go kill Wynne or make her into blood mage.

Yes, Wynn does have a personal quest. A really easy one, actually. The hardest thing about it is getting her to give it to you.

I, too, despise Leliana, and refuse to use her in my party unless I absolutely, positively, can't do without her -- and if I have to, I prefer either skip it (chests) or find a way around it. I truly believe it's a lucky thing I prefer to run female PCs, because as far as I am concerned, heterosexual guys got short-changed in this game. It's either the amoral, manipulative b!tch, or the giggly, and more than a little creepy, stalker with an eyelash fixation.

And when he told my PC, based on my dialogue options, he was ridiculously apologetic for withholding the information, and was sincere in his approach.
I think we look for what we want to look for in these games. But the dialogue options are so different based on how we play, all of us can be getting different responses. I know I discover new text everytime.
As a male PC, I make it a point of insulting Morrigan when I can because she actually is an incredibly self centered person, and my approval rating is near 70 only 20% through the game....
Its really great game design on Bioware's part to engender such a wide array of feelings for these characters.

Alistair is a terrific tank-- I've got him in tier 7 Warden armour now with a Fade Shield, all sheild skills maxed, cleanse the area if he gets hexed. Shield wall up, hardly need to heal him at all.
And I don't care what you lot think, he made me feel all gooey with that rose bit.
I practically have a bouquet from all my playthroughs, and it hasn't gotten old.
Yes, yes, I know. Let me save you Al-haters the trouble. Say what you will... my opinion won't change. LIke SuperMedbh said... I don't care what you lot think.

Leliana is my new annoyance. The whole parisian accent coupled with a "flobee mushroom hair-do" makes me want to eat a croissant or yell at the first French person I see...cant figure out which.
