Alistair is only as bad as the person playing him. If you keep him in crap armor, never run him, and never change his tactics, he's going to be really bad. Really, REALLY bad. There are a few characters I see that some people think are just terrible based on the fact that they (the person) has no clue how to set them up.

I don't like the Alistair romance, but for the most part, if I romance him, it's for my own plot reasons, otherwise I leave it (and him) alone. I do have to laugh that if he finally asks you to the tent, if you turn him down you get -10 approval, but if you ask him too soon more than once, he also gives negative approval. What about the PC's approval? Hmmmm? *grin* Ok, I will admit not too many female gamers will ever see that -10 approval, but I did!

He really does. I tried using him, even spent a lot of money enchanging his rune. But he sucks soooo bad.

If he sucks in combat, that's because you suck at spec'ing, gearing and/or utilizing him.

ahahha i agree, i just used him to take all the damage, and he sucked at that, so finally decided to go with the golem over him and its been waaaaaaay better

You have got to be kidding me you can do far better in both damage reduction and resistances by the end game with a regular shield warrior than with Shale.  You just do not know how to build a tank.  Granted he is a bit squishy at the beginning but then...he is just a bundle of stats you have to, you know, build your character.  He doesn't suck, you do.  I barely even have to heal him by level 16 or so.

By "sucks" you mean "rocks", right???  Image IPB

As much as I love Alistair's character, I freely admit he has a lot of flaws, but that is part of why I like him so much.  Alpha male characters with the depth of Duke Nukem are a dime a dozen in video games, and as funny as interacting with Sten can be, I really appreciate that the writers decided it was okay to not equate manliness with stoicism and grunting when creating the leading male character.

That being said, I spoiled the heck out of myself before the game came out, because I wanted to romance Alistair the "right" way the first time.  I'm glad I did now, after reading about how angry some people became after being dumped by him after the Landsmeet.  I'd like to think I would have brushed it off, but some of you people are vindictive.  Remind me to never cross ejoslin in real life.  Image IPB

Well said. I think the line that pushed me into "I MUST ROMANCE ALISTAIR OR DIE TRYING" was "For you, maybe. But it has to be a pretty dress."  Any man who could can say something like that, and then go smack darkspawn with a shield is well worth pursuing.

My first playthrough when I didn't know anything about how a game like this works, much less how to build a party or a character, I probably finished 60% of the fights with Alistair because he was the last one standing. It made me appreciate his role (and made me really hate playing sword and board characters). I've never had any problems with him being anything but a great tank, even with my terrible tendency to forget to upgrade his armour (he's been in grey iron splintmail at the freaking Landsmeet before).

As for his actual character, I have a tendency to like him. He has some mega-faults, but between plot contrivances he's fun to chat/joke with and you can really put him through the wringer on many romantic conversations with no disapproval. It's fun to make him work for it!

You can either start giving Alistair dual weapon feats when you get him (or respec him) if you want more damage or you keep up with the sword and shield feats. In either case, give him enough Strength for armor either 38 or 42, and put the rest in dexterity. When his dex passes his strength change him to dagger and shield (fight like a Scotsman: Dirk and Targe!). If you keep up with the shield give him the champion's shield and make Champion his second spec for rally. Once his defense gets over 120 or so, he can solo most groups by himself.

His personality is a lot easier to handle if you harden him. Though I don't really mind it either way, Leliana on the other hand...

Yah, Alistair rocks in a fight if set up properly, no questions.

Leliana is great too, but her personality rubs me up the wrong way. No, that's not quite right, her personality is fine - it's her tedious, preachy, Chantry lines in conjunction with being a bardic assassin/seducer. It doesn't work for me. If she was a preachy goody two shoes (like Wynne) then her speech/reactions wouldn't bother me. Or an amoral killer like Zev who doesn't spout the chantry line. The hypocrisy of her actions versus her speech/reactions grates on my nerves. But I freely acknowledge that that's me - some people actually like that combination.

It's the same with Al. If you're looking for maturity in him, you won't get it. He's young, sheltered, virginal, and rather emotionally stunted. Indeed, Zevran and Morrigan are emotionally damaged or immature too - unable or unwilling to commit to a loving relationship. Alistair's one and only no go zone is Loghain - and David Gaider explained why that is so. Heck, Alistair will even indulge in a threesome at the Pearl once you warm him up a little.

It's all purely subjective. Sweet and strong I like - he'll grow up eventually. Thuggish brutes along the Conan the Barbarian lines? Puh-leeze, keep them well away from me. [Edit: I might've found that attractive when I was a teenager, but that's too long ago to remember; I certainly don't now.]

And, I respectfully disagree with the OP.

Alistair is great to have as a tank. I gave him the blood Armor, 42+strength,a 20 in Cunning, and an extremely high Constitution. Then train him in the sword and shield feats; he really ROCKS.

I give Alistair Knight Commander's Armor and Duncan's shield and a good Dragonbone sword. Develop his Templar abilities and let him roll. He does just fine in battle. As far as his whining goes, those of us who have been married and spent time around small children have learned to tune out whining automaticly. I honestly never even notice it.

My daughter is almost 30.  It's been a long time since I had to put up with whiney little kids, so I handle Alistair the same way I'd handle them.  When I leave camp, I leave him there.  Then I don't have to listen to him.

@ robertthebard - for me it's worth a little whining to have a kid along who can drop a "Holy Smite" nuke on a darkspawn emissary.

Hubby hates Ali and never takes him anywhere, but once I showed him the awesome that IS holy smite he suddenly started making Sten a Templar.

Any character can tank for you. Sten, Oghren, Alistair, Dog, Shale. you have to equip em and spec em properly.  Hell, I could probably get Zevran to tank if I dumped loads of points into constitution. maybe Morrigan too-  some frontline CoC and Shock, Mind Blast, Flame.  spec her as an Arcane Warrior.

It's also sad-funny you gave him a rune - A RUNE. and now you've declared him to suck.  What did you do, walk into battle in underwear with his 1 rune weapon and you're shocked he can't tank for you?

I'm sorry, my friend, but YOU failed Alistair.  A soldier is only as effective as the officer who's leading him.

Alistair stood side by side with me through the entire game. Him and I are the ultimate meat shield for Morrigan and Wynne.  The four of us are unstoppable.

Now go away.

Actually, it's Morrigan who sucks.

However, only if she feels the need to suck on something of Alistair's will she let him know.

I won't know about this Alistar bloke. Alistair, on the other hand, is just like all the other party members... combat-wise. He's like a blob of clay, to be molded and shaped as the player sees fit. Personally, I always rather preferred dragging him along with me while I wait to pick up Loghain.

It sucked trying to finish that loghain fight at the landsmeet with a naked alistair.

Ali (I like nicknames, they mean I never have to remember how someone's name is actually spelled!) has faults personality-wise, and although I'd say I like him more then I dislike him, I totally can understand someone getting incredibly annoyed and irritated with him. Looking at him as a collection of numbers and choices, though, I think he's one of the best characters of the game.

I usually respec, which means that everyone is useful and great (paticularly poor dear Zev, who's late game recruitment sort of screws him over). But if one doesn't respec (or are playing on a platform without mods), Ali's pretty well set up, and you get him extremely early. You can turn him in to almost as perfect a tank as you could create for your main PC. All the other characters had things that drove me nuts (well, Wynne and Oghran didn't bother me too much, but they're still not perfect), from Morg and Zev claiming they have skills that they actually don't to Sten's missing spec. Ali, though, can be got at... what, level 3/4ish? And he hasn't made too many mistakes by that point. I appreciate that.

I too thought he sucked, very early in the game. Luckily for him that was the stage where his goofiness was still endearing. His goofy to useful ratio changed as the game progressed ;) Later in the game Alistair became a great tank for me, although by then i had left him for Zevran, Cullen, and Teaaaaghan. And today I killed Isolde and he still gave me +7 approval and told me I did well, so today is a pro-al day :D Give him some good speccing and he will jump hoops for you ( tactics not forgotten naturally)

Haha! I thought so too after my first playthrough as a mage, when he refused to marry me in the landsmeet and then afterwards had the audacity to DUMP me! <_As a fem noble i romanced Ali yet again, only I was still a bit pissed about my first playthrough, so when I came to the landsmeet i ruined everything for myself and told Ali to ****** the fck off. Hee hee hee!
Vengance, sweeeeet vengance!

I still haven't had a "happy ending". I think I am still abit pissed about his prudishness and sense of "duty". Fcking puss, won't even stand up for the woman he supposedly "loves" :(

Other than that: <3Go Alistair!<3
