Velanna:
She was pretty nice to look at, though. And them Keeper abilities were cool as all hell.

Merrill is sweet and reminds me of when I was young ... just getting to know and learn about the wide, wide world around me.

Merrill is cute but I think her naïvety has been taken too far, so that she seems childish most of the time.

Merrill is a sweetheart and I want to protect her for she is a sweetheart. Both of them are different and fills their roles well.

I guess I'll go with Merril, if only because her personal story arc was interesting, even if you disagree with her decisions throughout. Hell, if you do it right, she'll even admit that she was wrong, or at least confused and misguided.
Velanna was just an unapologetic b*tch. She never says, "Hm, maybe I should feel bad about killing all those innocent people." I just hated her. So much.

Velanna and Nathaniel are the only ones who can be said to have "grown" over time as characters with their friendship with the Warden, both becoming less angry and more trusting of others. Justice and Sigrun were more about exploring a new world, so they didn't really change. Nothing really happened at all with Anders, as his quest was about saving him from danger. Oghren, well he's a special case isn't he? You get to carry over a character development from the previous game, see how it turned out, and try to help him.
But to answer your question, I will pick Merrill. Not because I like her more but because I think she is a better character. My preferred plays are with Merrill and Anders both on rivalry, even as a mage myself. With those two in particular, the rival path adds so much to their personalities and motivations. Going back to a friend path make it seem like something is lacking.

Merrill, however, is a bit stupid, stubborn, and self-destructive, but I really have a hard time not liking her.
So Merrill>Velanna

I think that they generally do a poor job of portraying the Dalish as hostile or rude. Perhaps it's because I've played these games so many times, but after a point I want to say "Enough with the attitude already, I've never wronged you in any way."Ophir147 wrote...
On paper, I think Velanna is an ok idea, since the plight of the Dalish hadn't really been explored by any exposition characters before. However, Grey DeLisle ruined the character for me. Call me shallow, but there are certain voice actors who are only good at making me hate a character. On top of that, she's a total **** of a character and is like a definitive walking list of character traits that make me want to murderknife someone.

I dislike rudeness. If the Dalish want to be left alone, I totally get that, but they could at least let a stranger get two words our of her mouth before being jerks. When I see this behavior from them I really do try to remind myself of their history and that they have little reason to trust anyone outside of their own clan(s). The effort wears a bit thin after a while though. But as I said, I've played both games numerous times, so repeated exposure doesn't help.

I thought Velanna was a complete and utter b****. She killed innocent people and still wasn't sorry when she found out. She just stayed angry at everything, unlike Morrigan, who actually changed throughout the game.

Velanna was regretful about her unproductive and misguided killings. She just doesn't bother telling the Warden Commander about it. She isn't interested in sharing her selfdoubt with anyone but Justice pushes the issue enough to even get her to ask him for advice on how she might atone. You're unlikely to hear it unless you make a conscious effort to run the two of them around though just as you're unlikely to hear Velanna's more friendly dialogue with Nathaniel unless you run the two of them around.
