How to deal with Level Drain without a Cleric? (And other questions)

Hey there. Just a few questions.

This is my second playthrough, as my first was aborted just before Spellhold. Level Drain was a bit of an issue, and on the first playthrough I had Anomen casting Lesser Restoration. On this playthrough, for both RP reasons and due to Anomen getting on my nerves, I'd rather not take him along. I'd love to have Keldorn, and from what I hear he just loves to kill Viconia, so I can't take her. I'd rather not use the Tweakpack to fix this, and I plan on bringing her on my next playthrough for completenesses sake, so I won't be missing anything. Finally, Aerie is a bit whiny for my tastes.

This leaves Jaheira and Cernd. From what I understand, neither of them have any way to remove Level Drain. Can they cast from scrolls? Is there any item that will cure level drain? If I take a druid, am I just screwed until I get to the next Temple?

Thanks a lot. I'm loving the big community despite the game's age.

EDIT: I'd also be interested in good, well-put-together mods. Currently, I have the Kelsey and Sarah NPCs downloaded, as well as the Banter Pack. I know about the G3 Tweak Pack. Are there any other mods that you would reccommend wholeheartedly? I've heard about Ascension; is that any good?

You can use "Amulet of Power" to stop level drain if you don't mind going against the vamps or there is "Hindo's Doom +3" to remove Level drain.

You could always carry a few scrolls of (lesser) restoration, as long as you have someone who can cast divine spells (ranger, paladin, druid, cleric) that should do.
If you find you get level drained more than the scrolls can cover, maybe you could consider changing your tactics to better avoid it.

The simplest solution is not to get level drained. The Amulet of power costs you 15k, but you need to pay it sometime, I try to avoid Ankathla at night until I've got it. Or you could side with Bhodi for the same cash, which delays the problem until you have better gear. Another way of preventing level drain is using berzerker or barbarian rage. I think even Minsc's rage will protect him.

Azureedge is a ranged undead killer, and it's cheap, although you need to be good aligned and able to use axes so often I can't use it. It doesn't protect from level drain, but a lucky shot can kill even liches. A dead vampire can't level drain you.

Hindo's doom is looted from a dragon on the 5th level of Watcher's Keep, so really not an easy grab, and casts restoration rather than preventing level drain. The upgraded versions of the Mace of disruption, Angurvadal, Runehammer, & Spectral Brand all provide negative plane protection, but only the iMoD is avaliable in SoA. The iMoD is forged by Cromwell using the illithium, and the Mace of disruption from Bhodi's lair. I generally send my thief in to steal the MoD, escape, and return after upgrading it.

You don't need a cleric at all, although this is easier if you have a thief, and pickpocket Ribald. Save first in case you fail.

Ascension is brilliant, but it only affects 6 fights in ToB, none of which you have tried the vanilla versions of. This isn't a bad thing, I only tried the vanilla ending once, on about my 5th complete playthrough. It is a tactical mod, making those fights massively harder. Given your other mods are NPC mods, the Imoen romance is pretty good, and I'm currently playing the Nalia romance. The longer road is also cool.

In the early part of SoA, the "chicken" way (sorry, Potty 1) to cut down on vamp bites is to stay off the streets between 10 PM and 6 AM.

The other way, is to do what those guards in the government district suggest - just don't get involved. The vamps won't attack if you haven't sided with the shadow thieves yet. And then when you see the last ambush (4 vampires), you can pay off Gaelen Bayle without any worry of vampires on the streets.

Other options:
1) Use a protection from undead scroll when facing multiple vampires. They can't hit you when they can't see you. But supply of those scrolls is very limited, so you should save it for major fights (i.e. invading Bodhi's lair for example).
2) Backtrack to a temple every time your characters get level drained - it will be tedious and somewhat costly, but it's a possibility.
3) Make your main character an undead hunter - they have innate immunity to level drain.

Also, I believe (could someone confirm or deny it) that arcane spell protection from magical weapons makes you unhittable by vampires - that would be another option, if it's true of course.

I forgot to mention, just very high AC can make the vampires much less of a nuisance too - they can't drain what they have difficulty hitting. I remember getting Picenon to -12 AC for the vampire lair and the vamps could only hit on criticals.

Similiarly, make extensive use of Minsc - whose Ranger racial enemy category is Vampires - when fighting them. A beserk Minsc gobbles vamps either with Lilarcor, or Azuredge. For those who like to play as ramgers or R/Cs, it is worth thinking about whether you want to choose vampires or dragons as your racial enemy. I go with dragons myself, thinking ahead to ToB, but picking vampires will certainly help you in the early part of SoA. And if you use a party of six, having 2 clerics ready with a protect from vamps spell, usually keeps bloody necks to a minimum and lets your fighters harvest the good XPs for killing them. Your PC should be able to say "I'm not afraid of vampires" long before Saradush.

I have an Undead Hunter protagonist and I give the Amulet of Power to a Cleric. That is two protected against level drain. The protagonist uses the Mace of Disruption, the Cleric has the Flail of Ages and the number three PC uses Azurazor. I stay off the streets at night until the party has all the above gear.
