DA is a really good game, the type that gets better the more you play it.  It's IGN's GOTY and #1 on Firingsquad's top 10 of 2009, and is sure to win many other accolades as well.

But... you have to admit, it made a REALLY BAD first impression with that joke of an intro movie.  From the low-res textures, to the unbelievablly generic writing, to the ludicrous Grey Warden charge scene.  Everything about it was low-budget and derivative.  How does that get past quality assurance?

How much do you want to bet that if they had cut the intro movie, the metacritic score would go up by like 3 points.  It just puts such a bad taste in your mouth.  Of course the game's charm gets to you after 5 hours of playing or so but for a reviewer for who first impressions make a difference, it's just a killer and a poor business decision.

/end rant.

There is no "intro movie" in Dragon Age. By "intro movie" do you mean the cutscenes after Ostagar? I thought they were excellent.

Which one are you talking about? There's six different ones.

nope there's only one. Just click New Game, you'll see the one I'm talking about. It's the first movie you watch, before you create your character.

The one that is like a parody of LOTR, and ends with the laughable "Maker help us all."

Maybe it's just me.  It was just so bad compared to the rest of the game, it would've been better if they cut it.

All those reviews that talk about the game being generic, that idea gets planted in your head by that first movie, because it's the most generic thing imaginable.  They shoulda just cut it.

*gives click back to guy above*

They all start the same. There's that tapestry, and then the sparks drift in from the right side, and the voice-over describes the darkspawn.

If you are talking about the orgin intros?

I didnt mind them, they were short and sweet, just enough to introduce the Orgin

Is there anyone who actually judges games by their metacritic scores? Wouldn't it be better to just find a decent review regardless of whether it has a score or not? And then there's always the difference in tastes and views to account for.

Anyway.. I thought it was pretty decent, really.

yeah origin intros were decent, not great. Ostagar was pretty darn good.

The video about the black city, the maker, tevinter and the darkspawn? (i thought that was pretty good) or the one with duncan and the grey wardens etc I think its an in engine render but i know what you mean. I think.

yeah the in-engine render part of it specifically. the graphics for the black city/maker/tevinter part were nice and BG2 style, but the writing was just so bad. It was like they hired Dan Brown to write the voiceover.

Ahhhhh what the heck. I'll whine, too.

I was expecting all the cinematic cutscenes to look like the Sacred Ashes Trailer. I was not aware that the trailer was made by a third-person company and based off of nothing until I loaded the game the first time. I felt a little ripped off (especially looking at trailers recently of FF13 - why doesn't DA:O look like that?)

No I don't think too many people care, but it's a pretty big thing in terms of business.  Apparantly there are even contracts and monetary incentives for developers based on metacritic rating.  It's no big deal I guess, but I just can't help thinking just a simple cut of that movie and scores go up + devs get a lil more money.

I never really saw the the introduction video you referred to. I just skip it all the time to get to the Character Generation.

It's not that bad...

Not great, and I only watched it once but it didn't sour me.

Meh. The in engine renders don;t look quite the same as my PC can make. So I think you may have a point but i wasn;t particularly put off by the graphics and duncan's voiceover was pretty good in it. I must admit there is a significant cheese element to DA in alot of ways. Not stilton level but definatly a chedder or parmisan. Feta perhaps although that doesn't smell so bad.  Find it funny though.

the only thing that always makes me laugh about the intro movie before the character creation is how duncan has such a spring in his step like hes wearing sneakers or something.

I must admit, the grass was epic fail where duncan was. When I saw that, I went "great, this game may just suck." But luckily the textures improved, and JB textures mod also came out so im happy :)

Whoa I just saw the Sacred Ashes trailer for the first time after reading this.  WHOA.  WHY ISN'T THAT in the game??

And all those characters are like 10x cooler looking than the current DAO ones, especially Allister and Morrigan (though the current Morrigan is pretty cute).  Why Bioware WHY :pinched:

Allister isnt in that trailer. At least that is my impression. It is Sten, Leliana, Morrigan and a random character that is supposed to be the PC.
