What's this about being sterile? I thought taking the Grey Warden poison just shortened your lifespan by a decade or two (30 years from the time of the joining, according to the wiki, which lets face it, in a medieval environment you can't expect a long life even at the best of times). I don't remember hearing anything about sterility, though.Time4Tiddy wrote...

Now on topic, I just hate Dunken to begin with so lets just say I watched the opening once and have skipped it every time being that I want as little to do with the man as possible.(Yes they have the right of conscription yada yada yada, but damnit, the human noble origin made me hate him. A Teyrn is about to lose everything and he blackmails him into taking his only *known* surviving offspring and giving him/her what is effectively a death sentence that could be carried out anytime between immediately and 30 or so years from now)
Not to mention, as the heir, you are now most likely sterile. It would be one thing if you could take a break from wardening to sire (or birth) a few bastards to carry on the Cousland line. On the other hand, at that point in the game the assumption is that Fergus will survive the battle at Ostagar, since the king assumes an easy victory.
But I'm with you, I hate Duncan, too. He's an unfeeling jerk in every origin I've played through (four so far), and I always choose the snarkiest responses now to put him in his place.
I almost stopped playing after the intro movie

DA is a really good game, the type that gets better the more you play it. It's IGN's GOTY and #1 on Firingsquad's top 10 of 2009, and is sure to win many other accolades as well.
But... you have to admit, it made a REALLY BAD first impression with that joke of an intro movie. From the low-res textures, to the unbelievablly generic writing, to the ludicrous Grey Warden charge scene. Everything about it was low-budget and derivative. How does that get past quality assurance?
How much do you want to bet that if they had cut the intro movie, the metacritic score would go up by like 3 points. It just puts such a bad taste in your mouth. Of course the game's charm gets to you after 5 hours of playing or so but for a reviewer for who first impressions make a difference, it's just a killer and a poor business decision.
/end rant.
To be honest I think we're getting into slightly ludicrous territory here. Okay, the renders were a bit pants but who in the right mind buys a game and stops playing based on the intro? And why was it so terrible in terms of writing?
I mean, seriously, there are for worse things to complain about. Like the DVD case the game came in. I mean, plastic? When is Bioware going to get with the times and start making them out of banana skins like everyone else does.....
/absurd rant

I laughed at sheer cheeziness of the "Then... came the Grey Wardens" line.

How should it have been written then? It did exactly what it says on the tin, which is act a quick scene setter for eveyone who won't read the codex entries and the novels.
Granted it was no Witcher intro, but I thought it was fine.

Yahtzee said - "this should be scrolled over picture of Arnold Schwarzenegger looking bored on the throne"
And he was right (again).

But then, the game itself is great, and I like the fighting in the Intro. Duncan kills those two darkspawn in a really cool way, and I loved the scene in which that dwarf crushes a head. Wish this was a finisher available ingame.

I have to disagree with you. I thought presentation made an amazing first impression, and just made me more and more eager to jump into the action. Unbelievably generic writing? Maybe our tastes are completely opposite, but I thought that passage was incredibly intense and moving.
At any rate, if it's that bad to you, then play another game. It's that simple.

Is there anyone who actually judges games by their metacritic scores?
Awwwww, metacritic is excellent for judging games. Look at user comments, find the illiterate ones. If they consistently score it high, keep away. If they consistently score it low, it is probably an awesome game

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed that the characters looked different than the CGI movie (graphics quality aside; they looked like entirely different people). Leliana was gorgeous in the CGI. She's OK in-game though so it's not a big deal.
