She's a lot more useful than the two soldiers guarding the door to the war room.

What the hell was the point of those two and that stupid scanner? Most annoying thing on the Normandy (asides from the stupid barred rooms.)

It's a loading screen used to load the war room.

anyone else think you don't really use her to her full potential? I mean she clearly highly skilled but her main function is to tell me if i get any emails, i mean there is already a blinking light for that

I found her more interesting than Chambers.

The only problem I had with Traynor was the way she was flirting with my broShep only to tell me she don't swing dat way.

Friendzoned.

No ,kidding.  Made me mad enough tto throw her out of the airlock.   At least Chambers would shake it up in your stateroom.

Chambers had a better arc though. She was happy go lucky, honoured and excited to work under Shepard on a dangerous mission, until she's taken by the Collectors, which deeply traumatizes her. And if you don't go to the Collector Base right away, she's melted in front of you.

Traynor has no such impact. She has no personal story arc and nothing really happens to her.

And for the record, I don't hate Traynor. I think she has a very like-able personality, but that as a character, she has the narrative equivalence of Engineer Adams.

Sajuro wrote...

I know you pointed this out, but she is the reason you were able to find sanctuary or rescue Grissom Academy.

Right, but if you transfered those two instances to EDI, would Traynor really have any purpose?

Which is what I'm getting at. A character should have unique functions. Could James calibrate the ship's gun? Doubtful, he's not really an engineer. Everything Traynor did could have been accomplished by either Liara or EDI.

Traynor does have a story arc. She goes from lab tech who is kind of freaked out to be on the Normandy in wartime, to realising she's actually a pretty good soldier*.

It's not super dramatic, but it's quite well written actually.

*or whatever you should call a member of the Alliance navy.

meh, she's just Liara from ME1 reused since Liara seems completely different every game

I've never played ME1 (PS3 user here). What did Liara do in ME1?

She didn't do anything in ME1. No one did. All non-human characters lacked personality so they could be talking codex pages to tell you about their people (especially Tali)

Even Garrus was nothing in ME1 except a amazing sniper. All the amazingness of the characters comes entirely from ME2. Garrus became awesome once he took a missile to the face, and I actually wanted Tali as a love interest even though i never even wanted to in ME1.

The game changed a lot from ME one to two.  Characters had a lot more depth in 2.  Still, with Wrex, Garrus, Tali, Liara, Ash, Presly and the rest - I liked them.  Shepard helped these characters grow.  Tali wa s a kid, so was Liara - even though she was 108.  Garrus was learning from Shep, and Shep is the one who encouraged Wrex to help his people.

I wish they would re-make ME1 in the ME2 engine.  I liked ME2 better than the ME3 engine, for some reason.

her character is great for the amount of time she has. Femshep helps her feel comfortable throughout the game. She passes along info that no else was able to. And for me, she is the only one that has the "balls"to call my femshep princess. Also, she is the only one that has 2 romance scenes

I hear what you're saying with the thing about "telling now showing." Thing is, I think they"showed" enough. EDI's expository comments about Samantha's wonderfulness did feel a little forced and 4th wall-breaking, I'll grant you that.

You mentioned Cortez. His arc had its own problems. Mainly, some really cheesy writing in a couple of parts.

Overall, though, I thought Traynor and Cortez were both pretty well done.

Yeah it thought they were well done too

You should show us, not tell us, that you're an amateur writer.

I used this preface because my chosen career path colours my opinion to some degree. Obviously I take tropes and literary deconstruction more seriously than others, but I also wanted to let people know that, no, I'm not some professional like the BioWare folks are, and that should be taken into consideration as well.

All of which is adequately conveyed by the use of word "amateur," which does in fact work as a "show, don't tell" concept. "Show, don't tell" only truly works for people who are actually willing to look beyond what they are told directly, which is obviously not you.

Except your career path is irrelevent; especially here on the internet where you can't go two feet without running into an amateur this or professional that. If your argument had merit then it would stand on its own two feet and wouldn't require you to flaunt your supposed credentials.

Additionally, I find it rather humorous that you say your profession makes you uniquely sensistive to tropes and literary deconstructions, and yet through four playthroughs of mass effect 3 the thing you had the biggest issue with was Traynor's informed abilities.

I agree. It's why I don't really like her as a character. Because instead of seeing her change as a character, she telling me how she's changed as a character. And Shepard automatically tells her how she's changing as a character too. There's a lot of telling, but no showing. And it's very annoying.

Only because they gave her some of Liara's roles. In the original script, Liara did what she did.

So? Liara also probably took Miranda's place in retrieving Shepard's body. It's obvious it should have been Miranda.

In the end, this is what we get. Traynor is better than Liara in finding intel.
