Area Overload to hit more enemies. With enough passive damage and upgrades, Area Overload will always fully strip the shields of basic enemies. Heavy Overload will never fully strip the shields of elite enemies.

I like Area Overload too.
Makes the whole protection thing near moot if you bring Miranda and Garrus.

Keep in mind there are many ways to increase the damage of abilities through gear etc. But, I've always prefered focusing on 1 enemy at a time. The quicker you drop enemies off the less dmg you take etc. Not to mention that enemies tend to be smart enough to not all stand around together.
I like to focus on high dmg, single target abilitites, with quick reuse.

Area is the clear winner.
For most powers in the game Area variations are better.

I like area overload on a companion because I generally use biotics and powers. If I can get Miranda or Garrus to strip a group of it's protection then trap them with a singularity I can start to have some fun
