Have you seen the Chinese version of Departed? They were both good, but I liked the original a bit more. Tony Leung is a great actor.

Infernal Affairs, and I agree its the better film.

My best:

Vertigo
Blue Velvet
Goodfellas
Rio Bravo
7 Samurai
Heat
His Girl Friday
The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp
Touch of Evil
2001

Here's my list, Though please observe: No particular order:

Bladerunner (1982) (Ridley Scott)
Alien (1979) (Ridley Scott)
Duel (1971) (Stephen Spielberg)
Empire of the Sun (1987) (Stephen Spielberg)
The Thin Red Line (1998) (Terrence Malick)
** Aguirre, Wrath of God (1972) (Werner Herzog) (german lang.)
The Hidden (1987) (Jack Sholder)
The Thing (1982) (John Carpenter)
Southern Comfort (1981) (Walter Hill)
Deliverance (1972) (John Boorman)
The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) (Peter Jackson)
The Two Towers (2002) (Peter Jackson)
The Return of the King (2003) (Peter Jackson)
** Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) (Peter Weir)
Master and Commander (2003) (Peter Weir)
** The Simple-Minded Murderer (1982) (Hans Alfredsson) (swedish lang.)
Memento (2000) (Christopher Nolan)
The Last of the Mohicans (1992) (Michael Mann)
Dances with Wolves (1990) (Kevin Costner)
The Matrix (1) (1999) (Wachowski bros)
Terminator (1) (1984) (James Cameron)
Lawrence of Arabia (1962) (David Lean)
Seven Samurai (1954) (Akira Kurozawa) (japanese lang.)
Batman (1) (1989) (Tim Burton)
The Wild Bunch (1969) (Sam Peckinpah)
The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (1966) (Sergio Leone)
Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) (Clint Eastwood)

EDIT:  I think I want

Chinatown (1974) (Roman Polanski)
Sleepy Hollow (1999) (Tim Burton)
One-Armed Swordsman (1967) (Chang Cheh) (chinese lang.)
Papillon (1973) (F.J. Schaffner)
The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) (Stephen Hawkins)
L.A. Confidential (1997) (Curtis Hanson)
Usual Suspects (1995) (Bryan Singer)
Brazil (1985) (Terry Gilliam)
Casablanca (1942) (Michael Curtiz)  (I caved in, finally. It was intentionally absent, but a movie that is pretty much impossible to do a remake of, has a lot going for it.)

On that list too.

Intentionally absent, is anything by Stanley Kubrick (they're all quality stuff, but IMO don't go all the way), as well as 'Citizen Kane' (for me, my perspective on the world, it doesn't work). Pretty much anything major, including a number of wellknown french movies, which is not on my list, is absent by intention, since I believe I've seen them all. I have to make merciless cuts, or the list will be crazy long. Many, many great movies are not on it. I may have forgotten some though, like Usual Suspects, which became a last moment addition.

**  Marks smaller movies which are absolute exquisite gems, which most of you have probably not seen. For anyone interested in movies in a wider, more contemplative sense than spectaculars such as 'Transformers, Lord of the Ring, Inception, Bourne,' etc, you are highly recommended to check them out. But they should NOT be watched with friends and pop corn! Privacy is recommended for at least two reasons.

Great movies. I tried to remember the title of 'Papillon' for my list, failed and gave up Image IPB

And I very seriously considered 'The Ghost and the Darkness'.  I'm quite surprised that anyone else even knew about that movie.

I knew I was forgetting something important: I meant to add Rear Window to my massive list, although technically you can put almost every movie by hitchcock on it by default. I particularly enjoyed Rope for the attempt to shoot it in one continuous take. Strangers on a Train and Shadow of a Doubt are two of my faves that I didn't put on the list.

I also liked Papillon quite a bit, great film - should've added it in, but it didn't pop into my brain earlier. I loved the first two Terminator movies, should've popped them on the list (oh well). Ah, one of my favorite Spielberg movies is Duel too! I also agree with the LA. Confidential picks above and absolutely agree with The Grapes of Wrath. Love the Ghostbusters movie, but I was in serious film mode earlier, heh. Seeing those other picks triggered me to add a few more in:

Of Mice and Men (1939)
12 Angry Men (1957)
Requiem for a Heavyweight
Paths of Glory
Seven Days in May
Mister Roberts
Bullitt
Sweet Smell of Success
Fail-Safe
Deliverance

Wag the Dog

I'm sure I'll think of more later.
