I saw Max Payne in theaters, caught Hitman on FX one day, and bits and pieces of Resident Evil, which didn't look like RE at all.

Adaptions are usually different from the orignal material especially when we're talking about 2002's Spider-Man and 2001's Tomb Raider movie.

Max Payne was an utter disaster and is the reason I hope a ME movie never gets made, out of fear that the disaster would replicate itself. As someone who played those two games over and over, I wanted to cry after seeing the movie. James McCaffrey being reduced to a damn cameo? Just... <_<

I hope you didn't play the Max Payne game based on how ithe movie was pretty close to the game.  You already lost with Paragon Lost.  It seems like that why you hated it based on a certain actor not getting the time that you wanted.

once again the gamers who played the game that became movies hate it, while everyone else who hasn't played the game likes it and more of that movie comes out, thats how it works, don't point at us because we see it once to know we hate it

Thats a huge and bad assmuption especially when you include comic books and novels into that equation.

this isn't about comic books or novels, this is about the Mass Effect film, which is a video game, stop trying to change the subject

Yet you're still using a huge assumption by focusing on the video game part especially when most of the video game adaptions do as well as most of the comic book based movies.

Thats a lie and you're proving yourself to be a real ass based on your assumptions just like the old saying goes.

Joss Whedon is sort-of a good match for the ME series. He handles multiple characters (like characters in ME2) very well, but I rarely see him go into the philosophical/techy details (like themes in ME1); which could be good or bad.

The teams working on the Total Recall (droids and flying cars) and Dredd (cityscape, gangs, and action) movies might be another option, since it seems like they pretty much came from the ME universe.

James Cameron would be an interesting choice, but you're probably not getting him.

Also, anyone who's written decent Star Trek episodes and is not named Rick Berman.

hmm...funny...

Several months back, there was a discussion about what director would be a good fit for the Mass Effect movie, and though some people seemed to be throwing around the names of high-profile directors hahazardly, James Cameron was the only one that made sense. I totally agree that he's a pretty tall order, but considering the nature of some of the movies he's done, like "Aliens," "The Abyss," and "Avatar," he would definitely be a good choice.

Still, Joss Wedon would be an excellent choice, as well. Actually, given the fact that he's on a similar wavelength as we are, he'd probably be an even better choice than Cameron.

Give it to Joss Whedon, it's your only hope for a good movie.

Indeed.

You want to make a movie that will satisfy the nerds? Let a nerd direct it.

It's unfortunate, however, that they assigned someone else as screenwriter, but I'd be fine with it so long as the storyline is less nonsensical and paradoxical.

I think I'm one of the very few ME fans who simply don't care for the ME movie, not because of people think it will suck for various reasons, but because to me Commander Shepard are and will always be a woman. So a ME movie with mshep would make no sense to me since I cannot identify with him. I will just go, "what, who is that? That's not Commander Shepard!".

I am legend is a terrible movie, and I liked the Cell.

Everything else is just cookie cutter stuff and nothing special. not saying this guy can't write, just saying he has a style of writing that is standard of Hollywood.

Am I the only person surprised they never made an animated series for Mass Effect? Especially ME3, they had a lot of freedom there, could have made something that DIDNT focus on Shepard, but some random group of soldier or mercs.

Like Starship Troopers Roughnecks!

I wholeheartedly disagree with you.  I Am Legend is a terrific movie.  Way better than any "Zombie" movie I've ever seen.

You didn't read the book, did you?  I don't blame you since it is an old novel (1954).  Cracked did an article on ruined movies that included I Am Legend   LINK

FWIW I believe Cracked is spot-on with this one.  I read the book prior to watching the movie and really didn't think it was that great, but the ending was one of its highlights.  It is a bit depressing to see literary works dumbed down for the movie audience with no bad consequences to the producers.  If as many people read the I Am Legend  book as there were who played ME1 and ME2, then there may have been an ME3-style ending fiasco.

it was based on a book that had nothing really to do with "zombies" which is why alot of people did not like it

its a great book btw and a good movie based on it was "the omega man"

Seems like a mistake from a business sense. Mass Effect is popular but not popular enough to make a successful AND decent film, this has bomb written all over it. Look at the supposed WoW movie that is supposed to come out, it has a bigger fanbase, more revenue, but that is looking like a disaster as well.

I actually think that unlike most other video game movies, Mass Effect has a huge amount of potential to be this avatar-esque blockbuster, but right now the series and Bioware as a company don't have the kind of money to really make the film a success.

just focus on making games, please.

I don't think this surprises anyone. Has there honestly been a brilliant video game movie adaption, ever? Most of the time it seems the screenwriter doesn't have a clue what the game being adapted is like or about and produces a B grade snorefest or a complete abomination. The only one that has been semi-decent and authentic was Silent Hill. I'm also pissed there's even a Mass Effect movie to begin with; everybody envisions Shepard differently and it would have been better to make some kind of prequel or something. My Shepard is female, but I'm not deluded, the majority of the playerbase is male and a male Shepard makes the most sense, but even then everybody still has their own idea of Shepard. It just feels wrong. =(

Okay, I can understand the book not translating to movie very well.

I think a screenwriter can only do as good as the material he/she is given. They aren't always the idea people, they are usually given the outline of a story that they have to follow and flesh out with dialogue etc. They are basically writers-for-hire. The problem will be coming up with a solid, coherent 90 minute story. This film will not be aimed at solely at Mass Effect fans, it will be aimed at everyone (cf. Resident Evil franchise...*shudder*) so it will be virtually impossible to appease people who know every facet of the ME universe. I am in two minds about the whole thing. I want more Mass Effect...books, graphic novels, anime...but I'm just not sure 90 minutes and <<$100 million can yield a live-action film that does Mass Effect justice. I hope to be surprised.

YEY but its not to late.

They might give a random squadmember a lead role, you know become the commanding officer, James Vega just as an example.
They might also include stuff that ME is still missing.
Give the ingenieur proper glasses (space vizor is so oldschool). We know all ingenieurs are kinda nerdy.
Krogan should look more dangerous, more like space sharks. badass.
And they might make a pilot to check the reception, though we know it will be awesome, because everyone loves pokemon and stuff (you know, the animation quality is superepic).

But this would be to cool. Damn.

I hope that the movie will never come out. Ultimately, it will only hurt the Mass Effect franchise. If they do wish to make a movie in the Mass Effect universe, then it shouldn't focus on Shepard's story at all.
