I played BG2 some years ago, but not all the way through (can't remember why not) and loved it. I recently decided to play all the BG games from start to finish. Just as I was installing BGT, I found out about the new BG Enhanced project. Now I'm wondering: are the improvements in the 'refresh' likely to be worth the wait until end of summer? Or should I play BGT now? I was going to play through BGT with the 'basic' mods such as the NPC project--but will that content be also available for the Enhanced edition? I'd welcome your advice!

I would just go ahead and do a playthru now.

If only so you KNOW what the differences between BG and the BGEE are.

The only feature i really would like to have now is the zoom. Everything else won't be so different from the abundance of (good) mods that are already here.

Well, zoom and the new areas and NPCs... I've been one of those trying to get them to add at least a few surprise new encounters in the old areas, but, well, we'll see... And a lot of the workaround stuff that mods have had to do will already be in place, plus the plethora of BG1/BG2 fixes that will now be native to BGEE rather than needing mods... and the engine tweaks that make modding easier... and the little reworks of old encounters to polish them up... Plus the new GUI format and appearance... and BG2 game options into which BG1 has been integrated... and modernized screens and controls... but other than that, pretty much no difference ;-)

I wouldn't say BG1 has a lack of areas. The rest of the stuff you mention has all been done by the community*. I'm not really sure i like to trade the new user-friendliness, assuming you can still use all the mods out there with a DRM-client. But i'm biased in so far that i won't even install steam, which almost everyone doesn't seem to have a problem with.
