Even though the IT is still canon in my own head, let's take everything in as shown to us, shall we?
My Shepard deserved better.
I mean, come on. He just saved the galaxy. He even cured the genophage, and made sure the Quarians got their home planet back.( The Geth were there for a short while, but if the kid is right, they are now dead)
The dude is a miracel worker. Space Jesus!
And what does he get for all his hard work?
-Get shot by Harbinger. Okay, no biggy, it's only a couple of burns, we can walk this of.
-Get shot in the shoulder by Marauder Shields. Auch. Okay, slight bleeding, but we are still standing.
-Encounter TIM, and start bleeding all over the place afterwards. From a new wound that came out of no where. Yay. More bleeding. The guy sure must have a lot of blood in him.
-Then black out after huge bloodloss. Only reason he got up again was the kid making him.
-Shoot a tube and have the thing blow up in his face. That one has to hurt, seeing as he has no shields left to save him. Those got burned away with most of his armor.
-Get coverd in debri from the Citadel blowing up around him. Well sh*t. We are ****ed now. (I'm going with him being some where on the Citadel, since falling back to earth AND living is a little far out there)
Finally he wakes up, takes a breath, only to realise that he is alone, covered in blown up spacestation. bleeding from multiple wounds and big parts of his body coverd in laser burns. And on top of that, if the Reaper kid was right, now all his implants have stopped working to. He kinda needed those.
What a way to go. Like a true hero. Glorys isn't it?
What the f*ck. How did he deserve this? Is it a punishment for not picking synth or control?
And please, don't go "oh but it it's okay, the crew is coming to find him since they didn't put his name on the wall"
Yeah, I got that one too. But the best case for that is a couple of days before any one finds him, or even start looking for survivers. Plus, they will propably start on Earth and make sure they find every one there before checking on the Citadel.
Plus, that thing is huge. The Citadel got f'ed up, and there's no telling where he ended up.
Shepard isn't going to last all that long with all that has happend to him. It's a miracle that he is even still alive at that point.
Side note: They apparently know that Anderson is dead. How? And in the same scene they are ready to declare Shep dead. And, even if the crew is coming for him, thinking that he lived though it all, it's going to take them a while seeing as there is no mass relays to use right now. Not knowing where they crashlanded, I'm guessing it's going to take them at least a couple of days, maybe weeks, to get back to the Sol system.
Bioware wanted me to speculate, and speculate I did. And I don't like the result.
Destroy ending with high EMS = Shepard dying alone in a pile of rubble.

A piece of Citadel rubble could come crashing down on him/her for all we know.
This could happen regardless of the amount of closure shown.
We could show footage of a reunion... and just not show that Shepard's implants spontaneously explodes killing both of them.
Given that the scene isn't shown coupled with the different scene at the memorial provides a juxtaposition that wouldn't be present unless it was trying to state something different.
