While I do find his presence contrived to the point of straining my suspension of disbelief, without him the ME3 squad is so hideously dull with a bunch of goodie two-shoes who sycophanitcally worship Shepard that I find him quite refreshing. He also doesn`t lose any points for being better written than 95% of the ME3 cast.

I don't even know what this is supposed to mean. Garrus, Tali, EDI, Wrex, Ashley, Miranda, Jacob, etc are all in the game and are all not DLC. Therefore they are important.
