I jsut have a question regarding the various stones there are in the game, like quartz and... ah I can't remember any others. The description doesn't say anything about them, so are they just there to sell to merchants for money?

All of them useless except 1 quests at the denerim bar asks for 10 garnet

what Cheese said; be sure to talk to the various emmisarries from the factions you gather. They'll tell you about the things they need to make their soldiers strong.
