Note: This post doesn't contain story spoilers, but it does contain squad spoilers. So if you don't want to know who your squadmates are in ME3, it would be best for you to stop reading this post and play the campaign!

Also Note: I have seen this thread before, but there was no restriction on the size of your squad and I believe that changes this a lot

So something I've thought about lately, after playing all three games, is that while I liked every squad set you have during the 3 games, especially your squad in ME2, I would definetely have made a different preferred squad if the story was not a factor. So my question to you is: If the story was irrelevant (or adapted to fit within the context of your squad), then what would be your optimal squad lineup? While I did try to diversify abilities for the sake of combat, I decided that I'd rather select characters that I like that have interested me the most in my games.

So, if I could only have six members in a squad (please only choose 6 since that is the limit in ME1 and ME3, and I think 10 was a bit too much in ME2), who would you select? I would pick

Garrus
Mordin
Ashley
Miranda
Thane
Wrex

I chose these characters because these have been my favorite characters throughout the series. I'll probably get some flak for choosing Ashley, but she was my LI in the first game and I think that despite her obvious trust issues, she does have some personality (Alliance history, poetry interest, etc.)

So who would you pick in your optimal six-man/woman lineup? Here is a reference of every possible squadmate
in the three games (please restrict yourself to this list...I will also be keeping a tally just for personal interest)

Mass Effect 1:
Ashley: 9
Kaidan: 8
Wrex: 43
Garrus: 53
Tali: 35
Liara: 44

Mass Effect 2 (no repeats listed):
Jacob: 0
Miranda: 28
Mordin: 31
Grunt: 14
Jack: 21
Samara: 7
Morinth: 4
Thane: 12
Legion: 25
Zaeed: 8
Kasumi: 9

Mass Effect 3:
James: 11
EDI: 10
Javik: 20

Interesting question.

If I could have only six, then I'd guess:

Garrus
Liara
Tali
Ash
Mordin
Wrex

But it isn't that simple - one of the main reasons I enjoyed the game so much as characters shifted into different roles and hence you gained and lost squaddies depending on that shift, so it isn't a straightforward question of which 6 I've wanted.

Liara, Garrus, Wrex, Zaeed, Legion, and Kasumi for me based on my enjoyment even when my main group was Liara and Garrus out of the trilogy.

By the way, you left Grunt off of the ME2 list.

Tough to narrow it down but I suppose

Liara - Apart from Shepard, she's my favorite character in the series

Garrus - To be honest, I didn't really understand what made him great until ME2/3, but he's now besties with my Shepard, so he needs to tag along

Grunt - I just love him, he's a safety blanket, nothing too bad can happen when Grunt is with you :)

Miranda - I really liked her in ME2, before she fully trusts Shepard. She isn't your best friend or anything, but you've both been given an assignment, and she's going to do what it takes to carry it out.

EDI - I really enjoyed the conversations Shepard shared with her in 3, and I loved watching her grow and learn

James - Call me crazy, but I pulled a total 180 on him. I went in to 3 CONVINCED I would hate him, but there's simply nothing to hate. He's just a great, fun character.

I only ever used Tali and Garrus, the rest just sat on the sidelines *shrugs* I guess that's why i'm one of the few people who isn't all that bothered by the small squad we got in ME3.

My ideal six-man team though? Tali, Garrus, Mordin, Wrex, Legion, Zaeed.

My team:

Liara - The best character and my Shepards LI.

Thane - Badass drell assassin!

Garrus - In case we need to calibrate anything.

James - I don't really get all of the Vega hate. He was designed to be naive, new players were supposed to be able to relate to him!

Legion - This unit has a soul!

EDI - She kissed Jeff for luck :P

You do bring up a good point...I love how the squads change between the games. One of my favorite moments is when you find out that Archangel is Garrus. I had no idea that it was coming and it was cool to see a farmiliar face. I suppose this hypothetical scenario would be more if ME3 did not conclude Shepherd's story, and you had to pick a squad independent of the story for ME4...and that all the characters would be repeats. I suppose that's what I was thinking when I made this. And I guess you'd have to have the power to resurrect anyone that died, which is extremely unrealistic :/

Oh and thank you to the poster that noticed that I forgot Grunt, I fixed that :D

Edit: Yikes and Morinth too! Added her...although definetely not my personal fave squadmate :P

There is no one optimal squad, at least in ME2 and ME3. It really depends on the abilities your shep brings to the table, and the type of enemy you're going to fight. Some are pretty general purpose (Miranda, Garrus), some are good at fighting synthetics (Kasumi, Tali, Legion), some fighting husks (Jack), some fighting krogan/vorcha (Grunt, Mordin). Some of them are really interesting, but useless in combat (Tali, Mordin).

If I had to choose six characters in an attempt to cover all bases, they'd be:
-James (Grunt's survivability, better mix of powers)
-Garrus (Great general purpose squadmate, excellent weapons damage)
-Miranda (Hits all bases like Garrus)
-Legion (Hits all the tech bases of Tali, has EDI's survivability (if like me you assume that Defense Matrix and Geth Shield Boost are, as a practical matter, the same thing), has a better weapon selection than either of them)
-Jack/Liara (hit sort of the same bases vis a vis biotic power/combos)
-Kaidan/Samara (Reave is so, so useful against Reapers in ME3)

The big problem in assessing ME2 squadmates is that we don't know what their fourth power in ME3 would be. If Miranda had, say, Barrier as her fourth power, doesn't that change everything? What if Jack got AJ Biotic Sphere? How awesome would that be? What about Legion or Samara?

Garrus Vakarian: There's no Shepard without Vakarian and he's my best bro

Tali'Zorah vas Normandy: Best friend and occational LI

Urdnot Wrex: Best Bro no. 2. Too badass to leave behind. (If Wrex wasn't available. Grunt can take his place)

Liara T'Soni: My canon LI

Legion: I love this Geth. He's awesome.

Mordin: The Very model of a scientist salarian

If I could have a squad of 8 Jack and Javik can come with.

For me, this is a game of balance. I want one squadmate of each class. I want a good range of weapon specialism. I want an even balance of genders, an even balance of characters, and an even balance of species - two humans and four aliens.

Ideally, it'd be something along the lines of...

THANE - Adept
KASUMI - Infiltrator
MORDIN - Engineer
MIRANDA - Sentinel
WREX - Vanguard
GARRUS - Soldier

Problem for me is, all my favourite characters are technicians. Mordin is non-negotiable, if you asked for my perfect one-man squad, it'd be Mordin, every time. But the next three I really want to fit in are Garrus, Tali and Kasumi. Kasumi's technically an engineer as far as I'm aware, but she uses tech and cloak powers, her powers are geared for close quarters combat, and she uses grenades - she's like a tech vanguard, so I can try and sneak her in as an infiltrator, but that means pushing Garrus into the soldier role, and he's so clearly not a soldier that the whole thing falls down. So, realistically, my four's down to two. Ugh. This is hard.

Right. I definitely want Thane and Mordin. 100%. James, Kasumi and Miranda are my favourite humans, but I want one of each gender - so I'll say James to get the soldier out of the way and Miranda, because sentinels are in such short supply. But then we need a female alien infiltrator, and a female alien vanguard, neither of whom exist.

So I'll have to replace Thane or Mordin with a girl. And that's a battle Thane can't win. So in the end, it's starting to look more like this --

JAMES - Soldier
LIARA - Adept
WREX - Vanguard
MORDIN - Engineer
GARRUS - Infiltrator
MIRANDA - Sentinel

I'm annoyed with Liara being in there. She's fine, I like her enough, but I'd rather have Tali, Kasumi, Thane, Legion, EDI in her spot... and yet, we need an adept, we're one girl down, and I like her more than Jack, Morinth and Samara. So she's found her way in.

James is great fun. Good guy. One of my favourite humans - certainly the best human male the game has to offer. We've got two tanks in the form of James and Wrex, four ability-specialists in the forms of Liara, Wrex, Mordin and Miranda, a healthy balance of snipers, shotguns, pistols, submachine guns, assault rifles - the lot. We've also got all four council races, plus the krogan. I'd love a quarian, just for another perspective, but a rule of six is a rule of six.

Great idea for a thread. Very difficult. Fun balancing act.

EDIT: Sh*t, no. We're still one girl short. Bums!!

Garrus: No Shepard and no ME without Vakarian!

Tali: Favourite LI, utterly adorable.

Thane: I don't even need to explain this one...

Legion: "Shepard Commander"

Last 2 are very tricky:
EDI/Mordin: Quite possibly the two funniest characters in the series, both fantastically entertaining. EDI's growth is a joy to watch, and Mordin is, well, Mordin!

Wrex/Samara: Wrex is the original Krogan badass squaddy, hard not to bring. Samara is a personal favourite of mine, always felt much more interesting and impressive compared to Liara.

-Garrus: My brother from another mother and... species.
-Tali: Forever my LI, well about 90% of my playthroughts.
-Wrex: Like another bro, the older one
-Liara: I just like her but I really don't know why.
-Thane: He is just a badass.
-Ash: She is that other 10%, she is my most likable human female of the possible LI.

If I could have two more, it would be Kasumi and Grunt.

Wrex was my tank in ME1, Grunt in ME2
Tali/Garrus for synthetics, Garrus is surprisingly versatile across all 3 games
Zaeed over Thane, I honestly found Thane a little boring!
Liara for that singularity, so awesome!

That pretty much covers it to be honest, I don't vary my squads too much once I find a configuration I like, especially since I only play on insanity.
