Miranda: My canon LI and the most versatile character in the series. She can wreck any defense, leaving you free to choose any other squad member you want for a mission.

Garrus: Shepard's battle buddy. Brings lots of firepower to the table and some tech ability to boot.

Wrex: Shepard's other battle buddy and my favorite character for humor. He's also a giant bulldozer of destruction and brings a lot of firepower and biotics to the table.

EDI: All the tech you will ever need.

Liara: Every team needs an Adept.

Ashley: My favorite soldier and sometimes LI.

Replace Liara with Kasumi and Wrex with Grunt, and you have my standard squad pool in ME2. I only use other squadmates if I have to (e.g. loyalty missions) or if a particular person gets a bit of unique dialogue I like.
