I searched and noticed the last posts about this issue were from 1 or 2 years ago, so rather than revive a necro thread I'm posting this one.
DAO is a great game but suffers a bit from characters forcing their way into the group. This can (still, after patch 1.05) lead to problems if you try to kill or dismiss all of your companions like I've been doing in a current 'dark warden' playthrough.
Morrigan: forced into the group; can be told to take a hike once you have access to your campsite.
- If you start but don't finish her personal quest before telling her to take a hike, her ghost will start a conversation when you later return to camp. You will be unable to complete the quest after visiting Flemeth because you can't initiate dialog with a ghost. Use console to add Morrigan back into your party, talk to her to finish the quest, then tell her to take a hike (again).
Oghren: leaves if approval drops too low; normally forces himself into the group upon finding Branka.
- If you manage to drive him away before finding Branka, his ghost will speak upon encountering her, and will consequently partake in any conversation after that as if Oghren was in the group. The way to fix this is to appoint a king, return to camp and use the console to summon Ohgren into the party. Talk to him and he'll comment about the anvil and how you have to get back to the assembly. Conversation ends and the map appears. Close it and your codex will be updated. Talk to Oghren again and he'll leave once more. (I did all of Brecilian Forest with ghost oghren commenting on various conversations.)
I normally don't try to dispose of my companions so haven't had these problems until now. Here's hoping this helps other dark wardens who'd rather be alone.
