 So far I've only seen people asking if they can replay with the same character but on a harder level, to which the answer apparently is no. I just want to replay the entire game, same level, starting back at original stats, with the same character, since I accidentally skipped out on obtaining a playable character at one of the earlier sections of the game. Unfortunately, I don't have a save file from that early on (apparently those autosaves don't stay saved?), so is there anything I can do short of creating a new character with the exact same looks?

I always make a save right after that first cutscene when it lets you. That way if I mess up something I can go back to the beginning and start over again. Or if I just want to do the same thing you want to. If you didn't make a save at the beginning, I don't think there's any way you can go back. You could start at your earliest save (though that isn't quite the same thing, it's the next best thing). Is your game PC or Xbox/PS3?

You only have a limited number of autosaves, so they overwrite frequently. If you don't have a save from early on, I'm afraid there's not much you can do except try to recreate the character.
