The first few times I started ME3 it loaded and ran at a normal rate. Tonight when I started the game it took at least 20 minutes to get to the menu screen and ran in extreme slow motion, < 1 frame/minute. That slow execution even affected the Options menu.
I have Mass Effect 3 and Origin installed on an external hard drive. The first time I ran the game through Origin I was unable to save. After I searched the internet for a solution I found the suggestion to run the game from the desktop icon with the -nohomedir option. That did allow me to start the game a second time, get through the intro, and make an initial save. I started to download the Extended Cut DLC through the game menu, then cancelled the download at about 3% after I saw that it would take >2 hours, planning to resume when I didn't need to use the computer for other things. When I tried the download later the DLC screen showed that I already had "purchased" Extended Cut and had no download button for that DLC. When I consulted online chat help to try to complete the DLC download I was advised to uninstall and reinstall Origin, which I did. Now when I try to run ME3 from the desktop icon I get the extreme slow motion effect and my internal hard drive runs constantly. It took at least 45 minutes to get to the options menu, where I saw that the options I set after I was able to save were still in effect.
How can I get a usable game again?
Extremely Slow Startup and FPS

Bump.
I'm getting this exact problem except I've never been actually able to play. I get 1 FPS at the title screen and menu and it takes forever to do anything.
I've disabled my firewalls, AV, updated to latest nvidia drivers and even tried out the beta drivers, restarted Origin, disabled the overlay, disabled and shut down MSI Afterburner, closed down pretty much all other programs, used game booster, downloaded and installed the DLC, repaired the installation numerous times, and I still can't get it to run properly.
My specs:
i5-3570K @ 4.6 gHz
16gb RAM
2x Gigabyte GTX670
SSD
Windows 7 x64
I've also disabled SLI, turned off all graphic functions like AA, tried running the game in 800x600 windowed, disabled nvidia control panel and even turned everything to 'application controlled'.
One thing I've also noticed is that it takes a very long time for it to connect to the EA servers and check for DLC (and seems even longer at 1 FPS) (10+ minutes) and I haven't actually tried to get into the game yet since it's taking forever.
Is there some way to fix this problem? Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks for the reply. I've rebooted many times and it doesn't seem to fix anything unfortunately. I've restarted windows and done cold starts to no avail.
