No question... Hale. I couldn't play the Male Shep games for quite a long time. He just seemed to lack any kind of emotional inflection.

I much preferred Mark Meer. I think he brought considerably more emotion to the role than Hale, as demonstrated by the opening lines of Mass Effect 2.

When Meer tells Liara to "go... now" it actually sounded like both a plea for his lover to get to safety and an order. When Hale barked the same thing at Kaiden, it was just an order. I found her to be a mite too aggressive in her delivery on too many occasions.

A lot of people favour Hale simply because she voiced the female version of the character. It became something of a symbol to disillusioned female gamers, who claim her voicework is superior without any real regard for actual performance. It's sad, really.

Way to tell a whole group of people that they don't know what they're talking about. And here I thought it was all down to personal preference. Obviously we all need to bow down to your superior sense of artistic integrity. Thank you for clearing that up and helping us see the light.

Are we talking about over the trilogy as a whole? In that case I'd say Jennifer Hale.

Though I am devoutly Meer, he had occasions of mediocrity in the first game. He begun to find himself in the second and by the third he was as good as Hale - he possibly superceded her too.

I say that because his Paragon and Renegade interpretations sounded like entirely different entities - with the exception being ME3's plentiful auto-dialogue which is beyond his control. Even neutral Sheploo was unique in its own respect.

Hale was consumate throughout the series and her inflection left nothing to a gamer's imagination. The flip side of the coin is that it also leads to less distinct differences between each of her interpretations; whether they be Paragon, Neutral, Renegade.

Just so happens Meer is the better fit to my idea of Commander Shepard.

Don't mention it, friend.

Objectively, Mark Meer put in the better performance. Some people prefer Hale anyway, but for reasons other than her inferior portrayal of the character - obviously.

I was a fan of Ms Hale from MGS and KotOR times, and she's been excellent throughout, so I voted for her.

But Mark Meer was more than competent in ME1, if a little flat. Over the course of the next two games, he really added a lot of personality to malShep, and he had some really great moments in ME3.

All good, all round, really. Is there a series with better voice acting out there? Really, only Dragon Age or the GTA series come even close.

Hale for the most part. But I have to say Meer does a pretty good drunk shephard in ME2.

I wouldn't call a personal veiwpoint objective. It seems that would qualify as being more subjective,  but everyone is allowed their personal opinion.

I'm not giving a personal viewpoint. I understand the difference between "best" and "favourite", unlike so many others here.

Odd, since I much prefer Hale and rather enjoy having a penis.

Mark Meer really improved with time (I absolutely could not stand him in the first game), but Hale still wins easily for me. If you haven't played FemShep yourself, watch the final conversations of Mass Effect 3 on youtube or something. She's so good it's positively heartbreaking.

Meer. Hale's ME voice sounds so forced and wannabe-tough.
I can live with Meer's flat ME1 voice just fine if it means never having to listen to femshep ever again.

Meer by far.  To me, Jennifer whispered her lines a lot throughout the series.  Case in point:  The paragon moment in ME2 during Zaeed's loyalty mission just after they enter the gatehouse and Zaeed causes an explosion is but one example:

Meer:

Hale:

At other times, she sounds flat in comparison to Meer.  An example in Mass Effect 3 on Sur'Kesh when Shepard speaks with Padok Wix "Does that include studying lost Krogan?" in particular.   Much better job by Meer:

Meer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESz7eK4WkEU&t=3m45s  (Begins after ad, which you can skip after 5 secs)

Hale:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xXeZytKL2s&t=2m50s

These are just a few examples of why I chose Meer.

Right. You enjoy having a penis. Your infatuation with your reproductive organ has been noted. I bet you primarily enjoy playing as female Shepard because "she has a nicer ass".

My above post wasn't all-encompassing, and the bulk of it, obviously, applied to females. Men like you have your own reasons.

They're both stupendous voice actors. Personally I prefer Mark Meer, just because I think his voice flows better. My other favorite VA would have to be Simon Templeman. BTW, what other voices does Hale do? I know Shepard does Volus and Vorcha, anything else?

I agree both are really talented VAs, but I'd say Meer overall since I have to choose one.

It was more along the line of "Hey, she emotes."  I'm sorry if this challenges your world view, but women can enjoy female characters for reasons other than their gender, and men can like female characters for reasons other than their looks.

I think it might just boil down to people either hearing things differently or they have a different idea of what THEIR personal Commander Shepard should like. Which just means both sides are right in their preferences of which VA sounds better for them. It's just like how people prefer certain genre of music over another.
