Right. You enjoy having a penis. Your infatuation with your reproductive organ has been noted. I bet you primarily enjoy playing as female Shepard because "she has a nicer ass".

It was more along the line of "Hey, she emotes."  I'm sorry if this challenges your world view, but women can enjoy female characters for reasons other than their gender, and men can like female characters for reasons other than their looks.

That assesment wasn't based on your gender, but rather the unsettling way in which you told a complete stranger on the internet of your fondness for your genetalia. I'll assume you're now done throwing around non-sequiturs.

People can like things for all sorts of reasons. However, anyone who favours Hale over Meer doesn't do so because she put in a better performance.

Gotta go with Jen on this one. My first Shep was a male, but after 10 minutes I quit and made a girl because I found Meer to be wooden. I think he definitely improved over the trilogy, but I personally prefer Hale by a mile.

People who favor Hale over Meer do so probably because, to them, Hale's voice acting suits their idea of what Commander Shepard should sound like. Likewise, people who prefer Meer probably thinks he does a better job at voice acting their vision of Commander Shepard. It's just a matter of preference, not necessary one is better than the other.

Hale is a terrific voice actor, but her worst work is Commander Shepard. She sounds like she's constantly trying to sound like a gruff soldier. Like Commander Shepard herself is putting on an act to try and sound tough. Everything that comes out of her mouth is over acted. I cringed when hearing her finish a sentence with the word "Collectors", which always, without fail, sounded like "Collect-heeerrrsss".

Now if her Bastilla voice was her Shepard voice, there'd be no doubt about who the better SHepard was. I would be playing Femshep constantly just to hear that level of VA brilliance.

Yes, we all have agendas at work.  It certainly has nothing to do with the fact that, at least in the first game, Hale's Shepard feels like a real person whereas Meer's sounds like a bored guy in a recording booth.

Still, I defer to you, God King of Things That Are Better And If You Think Differently You Are Wrong.

I honestly can't pick one over the other with certainty. They have their strengths and weaknesses. In my opinion:

I find that Hale does a great job of being sarcastic and intimidating, while Meer does a better job with level-headedness.

Hale is generally better with expressing more emotion, and Meer sounds stronger in making an assertion. Hale handles romance better, and Meer does speeches better.

To make a generalization, I'd say Meer does a superior paragon and Hale a superior renegade.

Meer for sure. I've made a few femshep characters but they don't carry the same weight as male.

Really? I've heard most people claim the opposite, actually.

That post is probably the greatest example of pseudointellectual sophistry I've ever read on these here internets and I've come across some beauts. So congrats!

I much preferred Mark Meer. I think he brought considerably more emotion to the role than Hale, as demonstrated by the opening lines of Mass Effect 2.

When Meer tells Liara to "go... now" it actually sounded like both a plea for his lover to get to safety and an order. When Hale barked the same thing at Kaiden, it was just an order. I found her to be a mite too aggressive in her delivery on too many occasions.

A lot of people favour Hale simply because she voiced the female version of the character. It became something of a symbol to disillusioned female gamers, who claim her voicework is superior without any real regard for actual performance. It's sad, really.

Way to tell a whole group of people that they don't know what they're talking about. And here I thought it was all down to personal preference. Obviously we all need to bow down to your superior sense of artistic integrity. Thank you for clearing that up and helping us see the light.
:pinched:

Don't mention it, friend.

Objectively, Mark Meer put in the better performance. Some people prefer Hale anyway, but for reasons other than her inferior portrayal of the character - obviously.

I wouldn't call a personal veiwpoint objective. It seems that would qualify as being more subjective,  but everyone is allowed their personal opinion.

I'm not giving a personal viewpoint. I understand the difference between "best" and "favourite", unlike so many others here.

If you're not giving a personal viewpoint, whose viewpoint are you giving? There is no fact in this thread. It is all personal opinion.

I like both. For example, Meer would do a specific line perfectly, while Hale not so much. But Halo would give more in a different line then Meer would for it. It really depends on how they both deliver their lines and that's why I've played each game with my personal ManShep and the default/import Femshep. They both do things differently and it's hard for me to pick and choose.

Jennifer.  I always play renegade and she is perfect. Meer is good for paragon.

I used to have a preference but after thinking about it for a while, I just can't see hearing Shep be anything other than Meer and FemShep being anything other than Hale. They both have their strengths and weaknesses but they are cemented in my mind as Shep now.

It was like the new A-Team. they just couldn't convincingly replace Mr. T as BA. Some people just can't be replaced. Could you imagine anyone else being the VO for Darth Vader other than James Earl Jones?

I am not really rabid about either of the VO actors for Shep, but they ARE Shep forever now for good or bad in my mind.

Between the two of them I have to say I like Hale when playing a renegade Shepard and I like Meer when playing a paragon Shepard. For me I like Hale's renegade performance because she sounds so brutal and cold. Meer really pulls off the paragon lines really well.

And the funny thing is, I feel the same way about Mark Meer's voice. Go figure.

ME1: Hale
ME2: Meer
ME3: Both

Hale sounded bored in a lot of her ME2 lines and didn't suit a paragon character. In ME3 both found Paragon and Renegade ground well.
