When a Companion joins automatically, like Alistair, can I get rid of him, or is he needed for the quest.

You cant get rid of Alistair. Anyone else, you can ask them to leave when you are in camp.

You can get rid of him, just recruit loghain he'll be gone faster than Zevran's virginity. Morrigan will leave if you refuse the ritual. Everyone else has a dialogue to say leave my group, kthx. Except dog, you have to kill him.
